Approval Junkie
Approval Junkie: Adventures in Caring Too Much | Faith Salie
15 posts | 11 read | 27 to read
From comedian and journalist Faith Salie, of NPR's Wait WaitDon't Tell Me! and CBS News Sunday Morning, a collection of daring, funny essays chronicling the author's adventures during her lifelong quest for approval Faith Salie has done it all in the name of validation. Whether its trying to impress her parents with a perfect GPA, undergoing an exorcism in the hopes of saving her toxic marriage, or maintaining the BMI of a flapper with a touch of dysentery, Salie is the ultimate approval seekeran approval junkie, if you will. In Miss Aphrodite, she recounts her strategy for winning the high school beauty pageant. (Not to brag or anything, but no one stood a chance against my emaciated, spastic resolve.) What I Wore to My Divorce describes Salies struggle to pick the perfect outfit to wear to the courthouse to divorce her wasband. (I envisioned a look that said, Yo, THIS is what youll be missingeven though youve introduced your new girlfriend to our mutual friends, and shes a decade younger than I am and is also a fit model.) In "Ovary Achiever," she shares tips on how to ace your egg retrieval. (Thank your fertility doctor when she announces you have amazing ovaries. Try to be humble about it [Oh,these old things?].) And in Wait, Wait, Dont Tell Me About Batmans Nipples she reveals the secrets behind Wait WaitDont Tell Me! (I study for this show like Tracy Flick on Adderall). With thoughtful irreverence, Salie reflects on why she tries so hard to please others, and herself, highlighting a phenomenon that many peopleespecially womenexperience at home and in the workplace. Equal parts laugh-out loud funny and poignant, Approval Junkie is one womans journey to realizing that seeking approval from others is more than just getting them to like youit's challenging yourself to achieve, and survive, more than you ever thought you could. From the Hardcover edition.

Mehso-so

This was a dollar tree find and kind of ended up being a buddy read.
It was alright. Nothing spectacular. I could have done without the dog/pet hating chapter.

Family vacation started today minus one who's working at a summer camp. We practiced our travel selfie while my husband drove all the way to Montreal from London, Ontario. I had time to finish Approval Junkie too. If you are a fan on CBS Sunday Morning or the NPR podcast "Wait, wait, don't tell me" then you should read this book. I am a fan of both and I loved it. Laughed and cried a bit until it was time to navigate

Sassy_Steph I miss family road trips to Montreal!! I grew up in Whitby and we would drive a couple of times a year for vacation to go visit family!!! 7y
mcctrish @Sassy_Steph where are you now? We even managed to hit the Jean Talon market on our way in 🎉 7y
Sassy_Steph I now live in Calgary!! 7y

Sassy_Steph You can't be old enough to have been away from somewhere 50 years! You look very young 7y
mcctrish Thank you @Sassy_Steph, but it was 1964 when I showed up in Calgary while the Stampede was on ( according to the lore: 3 weeks late, air conditioning broken, heat wave underway) 7y

Really liked this!! I loved the early stuff--the entertainment and marriage chapters--more than the baby/mommyhood chapters. Great voice. And I'm scared of how similar I am to her...😁

Not complacent but feeling productive with 21 1/2 hrs logged. Lost time when hubby came home & wanted to chat. Thanks for a fun weekend #24in48 @Litsy

2 out of 2 cats give this a "doesn't disturb our nap rating".

I really loved the mix of humor and poignancy. Faith tells a lot of funny stories but mixed in are her battles with an eating disorder, her struggle with fertility, and a gorgeous essay about books and her father.

A solid read if you enjoy memoirs with a twist of wry humor.

"Are you going to Davos this year?", charitably implying that I even understand what the World Economic Forum is. To which I answer out loud, "No, not this year," and in my head I add, "Largely because, for me, Davos is a knight in service to Stannis Baratheon, Lord of Dragonstone."

Michreads Are you liking it? 8y
WordsForWorms I just finished it. It was pretty good. If you dig memoirs with a wry twist. 8y

If you were watching us get engaged in Rome's Piazza Navona, you were probably thinking, "That couple standing in the fountain sure likes to hug a lot."
