The Phoenix Empress | K Arsenault Rivera
7 posts | 6 read | 10 to read
The Phoenix Empress, the sequel to K Arsenault Rivera' the wildly buzzed about The Tiger's Daughter, an epic historical fantasy in the vein of Patrick Rothfuss and Naomi Novik Since she was a child, the divine empress O Shizuka has believed she was an untouchable god. When her uncle, ruler of the Hokkaran Empire, sends her on a suicide mission as a leader of the Imperial Army, the horrors of war cause her to question everything she knows. Thousands of miles away, the exiled and cursed warrior Barsalyya Shefali undergoes trials the most superstitious would not believe in order to return to Hokkaran court and claim her rightful place next to O Shizuka. As the distance between disgraced empress and blighted warrior narrows, a familiar demonic force grows closer to the heart of the empire. Will the two fallen warriors be able to protect their home? Not really sure what to think about that one. It's easier to read as the first book, but it seems to long, as if the author didn't know where she's going, and what she wants. Didn't get into the story at all, even though the world is fascinating. If the series had more than three books, I would've DNFed here. But I guess I can read the last one now as well...

With finishing The Phoenix Empress I cleared my #BookSpinBingo board for March 😄 But I'm way behind with reviews. It's the same every end of the month with me 😅

I liked the first book, the Tiger's Daughter despite all its flaws, but this one was 75% boring, dragging along from here to there. It is not an epistolary novel anymore, and that's a bit sad, it was what made the first one more special
Hopefully book three picks up speed.

Pickpick

This continues to be a fascinating world in which two strong, nuanced & endlessly intriguing women fight for their love for each other, their lives & the fate of an empire. Married, promptly separated, & now reunited again, Shefali & Shizuka have much to catch up on even as events march inexorably towards trouble. Love the device of a letter to reveal a past & secrets to big to tell, love the main characters, & I look forward to the final volume.

Loved the first book in the series and am ready to go back to this world. Also, this book, just like the first one, has a beautiful cover. Ok, time to read...

Super excited about this week‘s book haul which has a little of this, a little of that, and a whole lot of excellent reading. Can‘t wait to dive in—as soon as I finish my deep dive into my TBR stacks. Only 6 more books until I hit 50! Hoping to make my goal by the end of the year. 🤞

AuthorJensenReed I really like Sanderson's Mistborn trilogy 6y
