The Secret History of Las Vegas: A Novel | 
pickDark and gritty, the investigation in this mystery is really just the frame story for the much deeper dive into our history and our choices. Dr. Singh is acting as a consulting psychiatrist for a case, but his personal backstory from South Africa during apartheid is a large part of this novel. I can't adequately describe this one in the space available, so I will leave it with incredibly well written and completely original.
pickOn the surface the plot is rather mundane: a cop wants to solve one last case before he retires. But Abani took the plot in directions so wholly unexpected, from secret nuclear testing sites in the desert with devastating consequences, conjoined twins that may or may not be killers, and the infamous death camp of apartheid South Africa. Strange, but beautiful writing that was both gritty and riveting.

so-soEnjoyable, but with an ending that seemed rushed and half-hearted.

pickThis novel is a dark and incredibly violent murder mystery set in Las Vegas. One of the main characters is from South Africa, and the story includes his memories of that country. A masterful exploration of evil and redemption, this novel is NOT for everyone.
