Dead Letters: A Novel | Caite Dolan-Leach
A missing woman leads her twin sister on a twisted scavenger hunt in this clever debut novel of suspense for readers of Luckiest Girl Alive and Reconstructing Amelia. Ahoy, Ava! Welcome home, my sweet jet-setting twin! So glad you were able to wrest yourself away from your dazzling life in the City of Light; I hope my death hasnt interrupted anything too crucial. Ava Antipova has her reasons for running away: a failing family vineyard, a romantic betrayal, a mercurial sister, an absent father, a mother slipping into dementia. In Paris, Ava renounces her terribly practical undergraduate degree, acquires a French boyfriend and a taste for much better wine, and erases her past. Two years later, she must return to upstate New York. Her twin sister, Zelda, is dead. Even in a family of alcoholics, Zelda Antipova was the wild one, notorious for her mind games and destructive behavior. Stuck tending the vineyard and the girls increasingly unstable mother, Zelda was allegedly burned alive when she passed out in the barn with a lit cigarette. But Ava finds the official explanation a little too neat. A little too Zelda. Then she receives a cryptic messagefrom her sister. Just as Ava suspected, Zeldas playing one of her games. In fact, shes outdone herself, leaving a series of clues about her disappearance. With the police stuck on a red herring, Ava follows the trail laid just for her, thinking like her sister, keeping her secrets, immersing herself in Zeldas drama and her outlandish circle of friends and lovers. Along the way, Zelda forces her twin to confront their twisted history and the boy who broke Avas heart. But why? Is Zelda trying to punish Ava for leaving? To teach her a lesson? Or is she simply trying to write her own ending? Featuring a colorful, raucous cast of characters, Caite Dolan-Leachs debut thriller takes readers on a literary scavenger hunt for clues concealed throughout the seemingly idyllic wine country, hidden in plain sight on social media, and buried at the heart of one tremendously dysfunctional, utterly unforgettable family. From the Hardcover edition.

Ava doesn't believe it when the email arrives to say that her twin sister is dead. It's not grief or denial that causes her scepticism - it just feels too perfect to be anything other than Zelda's usual manipulative scheming. And Ava knows her twin.

EadieB Two years after she left, vowing never to speak to Zelda again after the ultimate betrayal, Ava must return home to retrace her errant sister's last steps. She soon finds notes that lead her on a twisted scavenger-hunt of her twin's making. 2y
EadieB Letter by letter, Ava unearths clues to her sister's disappearance: and unveils harrowing truths of her own. A is for Ava, and Z is for Zelda, but deciphering the letters in-between is not so simple... 2y
EadieB This is a very unique book. I didn't like it from the beginning but it later grew on me. It was the author's debut novel so I blamed it on that fact. As I read further, I became really engrossed in Zelda's alphabet game and ended up really loving the book. You will just have to read it for yourself if you can get past the slow-burn beginning. Looking forward to the next book by this author.

This is my #BookSpin book.

Debut mystery;dark;brooding; & a well crafted story. While I sometimes wanted the author to "get on with it"... tiny bit tedious & repetitious character building for my taste... I really liked the concept of this book. Twin sisters & one is presumed dead. Best friends until they weren't; dysfunctional childhood; a thing with the alphabet. "Dead letters" is Ava's quest to find out what happened to Zelda one letter of the alphabet at a time.

Wow! Such a good book! Ava, living in Paris, returns home to the family vineyard in NY when she learns her twin sister died. As the story describes their relationship, Eva begins to unravel a mystery set in place by her twin, Zelda. Such a clever mystery and story about family dysfunction. I have lots of unexpected feelings at the end of this one. #MountTBR

This book was just the right amount of dark, the twist is one I didn‘t see coming which is always a big plus. Delving into family trauma, the main character is relatable, although driven by paranoia.

This will go down as one of my all-time favorite #botm picks, and I definitely wouldn‘t be saying that if I bailed on it halfway through like I was tempted to.

It seems like a cheesy, unlikely mystery that I stuck with only because Ava is such a dynamic, realistic character. I cared what happened to her and by the end I was nearly in tears. Also, the writing is 👍🏼. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

rather_be_reading i liked it too!! 5y
mcipher I read half of this when I got it from BOTM and then stopped because 🤷‍♀️ I do plan to pick it up again someday because I really wanted to know what happened next and I liked the writing. Weird how that happens sometimes. 5y

The first chapter or so started well and the writing wasn't bad but I lost interest fairly quickly. Didn't care about the backstory. Went online to see if I should hang in but the summaries I found told me I wasn't missing anything. So I moved on. Many books to read, and life is shorter than you think.

This was a really interesting concept about twins with a complicated past and a dark mystery involving the possible death of one of the girls. For me, it was a bit slow and the pacing just seemed to be off. It didn‘t move right. The reveal came to early and then it took forever to get to the point. But, I did find the actual story entertaining in some parts.

Identical twins! One leaves clues alphabetically to lead to a twisting story of a family in which all of them have their own problems. I think 400 bottles of wine may be the 6th character in this book! Love that each chapter, 26 of them, start with that numbered letter in the alphabet🙌🏼.

The story was pretty decent. A good mystery, no surprises but interesting to watch them play out. The characters were, for the most part, pretty unlikable. Major alcoholics, narcissists, self/centered idiots. I know you don‘t have to like the characters to have a good book, but in this case it would make the book that much more enjoyable.!

It was interesting to see how Ava pieced together Zelda‘s game to see where Zelda is hiding or if she really is dead. I was annoyed with how much alcohol all the characters were consuming throughout the book. Also, annoyed by the ending. Interesting plot and good writing though.

Meh...
This twisted tale of twin sisters is uneven. There are moments where it seems like a Gothic tale of family dysfunction. Then it lurches into a mystery. But it doesn‘t really manage to do both at the same time, or very well.
Also missing is any true affection for Ava on the reader‘s part. That‘s not uncommon these days. But given the ending, it‘s sorely missing.

Really #botm? These two? Best of?

Dead Letters is one of the worst I‘ve finished this year, and Emma is just mediocre...

swishandflick Oooh, now that I think about it, I didn't order it through BOTM so that would be why I can't see it. Should have logged out first 🤦🏽‍♀️ (edited) 6y
emilyhaldi I'm surprised by a lot- definitely Emma in the Night, that was totally mediocre. But also surprised by A Million Junes and Beasts... However, I suppose I might be in the minority in terms of my hatred for magical elements. 6y
Reviewsbylola Omg totally agree. These do not deserve to be on the list. A Million June‘s, American War, and Final Girls definitely surprised me. 6y
Megabooks @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola Junes and Beasts were definitely good if you like that kind of thing. I think Junes is one of the most loved of the year! Y‘all know how I feel about American War-180 degrees from you! 😂😂 Final Girls was so overhyped that I‘m not surprised. Not a very good mystery imo. Of the ones I got through my main account, I voted for Lilian 💜💜💜 6y
2BR02B I think it'll be Little Fires or Invisible Furies, but I'm voting for 6y
Megabooks @2BR02B Killers was amazing, but I read it as an audiobook. I think it will be Sing which had a lot of 🤢 and made me 🤢 a little! 6y
L_auren @Booksandcooks @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola @swishandflick Pretty happy with the list! Most of my faves are here: Lillian, Sourdough, Hearts, Evelyn, Pachinko, Leavers!!! IMHO it‘s missing White Fur (but lol I get it), After the Eclipse (too small time I suppose) and Stranger in the Woods!! 6y
L_auren Many so-sos on the list for me but actually none of my Pans!! 6y
Ehbooklover Hated Dead Letters. 6y
TheBookStacker Haven‘t read Sing yet because I keep hearing not good things but it keeps winning stuff so idk! 6y
Megabooks @L_auren I like all the nominees you listed and agree Eclipse should be there. Definitely a couple Letters is one of 5 pans that I finished. The rest I dislike are bad to so-so. 6y
Megabooks @Ehbooklover 👍🏻👍🏻 6y
Megabooks @TheBookStacker I didn‘t like it, but @Cinfhen really did, and I generally trust her taste (😘) so 🤷🏻‍♀️ 6y
Rachbb3 Dead Letters was awful. I liked Killers of the Flower Moon. 6y
Megabooks @Rachbb3 Totally agree! 6y
Cinfhen I DID like Dead Letters, wayyyy more than Emma & Final Girls, but it wouldn't be on my top list...I was disappointed not to see HUNGER, surprised Priest Daddy was missing too! I voted for Hearts but was debating between Sing & Leavers too! All in all I'd say BOTM had some REALLY strong selections!! So glad White Fur & Marlena weren't on list😉 @L_auren @emilyhaldi @Reviewsbylola 6y
Cinfhen Can't wait to see your picks, Meg!!!!! 6y
emilyhaldi @Cinfhen I would have loved to see Priestdaddy represented too! ❤️ (edited) 6y
mrozzz Final Girls and Emma both surprised me... how did they put these 20 together?! 6y
L_auren @Cinfhen LOL I understand. But Hunger wasn‘t a BOTM selection 6y
Cinfhen True, It was an add on, @L_auren 6y
Cinfhen I'm also surprised this one didn't make the list 6y
L_auren @Cinfhen oh true that seemed universally liked!! 6y
Reviewsbylola I do think BOTM had some strong selections but they fizzled out (for me) the last few months. December is promising though! And I think not doing the challenge next year will take the pressure off. Dead Letters was well written, in a way Emma and Final Girls wasn‘t, in my opinion, but it was way too long! 6y

You think you know, but you have no idea...

How well do you know your siblings; how well do you know yourself?

As many have stated before me, Dead Letters is not a thriller. Yes, there‘s suspense. Yes, there‘s an element of whodunnit. It‘s a story about family and the bond between sisters (who happen to be identical twins). The characters are significantly flawed and far from wholesome, but perhaps that makes them more realistic. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

This isn‘t apparently the popular opinion, but I liked this one! Yes, the characters are deplorable in their own ways, but they‘re not boring. It was written in such a way that I couldn‘t guess the ending. The author put in just enough to throw the reader off track. The only negative for me was that I was expecting a thriller, and this really wasn‘t. It was more of a mystery, or like a puzzle to solve.
