Ordinary, Extraordinary Jane Austen: The Story of Six Novels, Three Notebooks, a Writing Box, and One Clever Girl | Deborah Hopkinson
10 posts | 14 read | 18 to read
A gorgeous and inspiring picture book biography of Jane Austen, one of the most beloved writers of all time, from award-winning author Deborah Hopkinson. It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen is one of our greatest writers. But before that, she was just an ordinary girl.In fact, young Jane was a bit quiet and shy; if you had met her back then, you might not have noticed her at all. But she would have noticed you.Jane watched and listened to all the things people around her did and said, and locked those observations away for safekeeping.Jane also loved to read. She devoured everything in her father's massive library and before long, she began creating her own stories. In her time, the most popular books were grand adventures and romances, but Jane wanted to go her own way...and went on to invent an entirely new kind of novel.Ordinary, Extraordinary Jane Austen includes a timeline and quotes from Austen's most popular novels. Parents and grandparents, as well as teachers and librarians, will enjoy introducing children to Jane Austen through this accessible, beautifully packaged picture book.

A sweet, informative read about Jane Austen, mostly her early years. I can‘t get a picture of the book because this guy shoved it closed, pushed it out of my hand, and thrust his head into that hand. Guess I‘m done reading for now.

Reggie And he looks very bothered about having to do all that! Lol 4y
ravenlee @rubyslippersreads @Reggie I think he was mad that, after all that work, I STILL wasn‘t petting him with both hands! 4y

Let‘s be honest - this is for adult Jane Austen fans, who may force their little ones to sit down and listen to it (I admit nothing). The adults will find this charming and delightful. The children, well, maybe not as much. I admit to liking the illustrations more than the text, but dear reader, I was charmed and delighted.

What a delightful little book! The illustrations are charming, and I liked the mix of little and big words to help kids learn meaning and connotation. A nice introduction to Jane and her life, with a brief description of each of her novels at the very end of the book.

There was one fact presented that I‘m remembering a little differently, but I could be wrong! In any case, a very worthy read for Janeites. #janeiteforlife

Perfect for fans of all ages! This picture book biography of Jane Austen is a delight. Well-told and beautifully illustrated, it‘s a wonderful introduction to an enduringly popular author. Love the timeline of Austen‘s life, the inclusion of famous quotes from each of her stories as well as summaries of her books, and the short bibliography which tells kids a little about how the author did her research. Great addition to the library.

Two more wonderful picture book biographies for elementary age kids. Both were excellent! I‘m creating a summer session of hour long programs based on biographical picture books – real history and real lives that include related activities. I love my job. And suggestions happily accepted… hint hint hint…. #picturebookbiography

lyradora I heartily recommend "Of Numbers and Stars: The Story of Hypatia" by Love. It's about the famed mathematician, philosopher, and astronomer Hypatia of Alexandria as a little girl. Gorgeous illustrations, and very inspiring. #bravegirls #sciencegirls #mathgirls 7y

A really cute introduction to Jane Austen for young readers with a great message of female empowerment. The watercolor illustrations were a perfect compliment.

A fellow bookseller (Camille!!!! xoxo) got me this picture book galley and it is the CUTEST thing ever. The illustrations by Qin Leng are absolutely perfect - there's one of little Jane carrying a huge stack of books and RIP me. Definitely a book to pick up for Austen fans of all ages.
