Their survival is in their own hands...Samantha Mishra opens her eyes and discovers she's alone and injured in the thick of a jungle. She has no idea where she is, or what happened to the plane taking her and the rest of the Drake Rosemont fencing team across the Pacific for a tournament. Once Sam connects with her best friend, Mel, and they find the others, they set up shelter and hope for rescue. But as the days pass, the teens realize they're on their own, stranded on an island with a mysterious presence that taunts and threatens them. Soon Sam and her companions discover they need to survive more than the jungle... they need to survive each other. This taut novel, with a setting evocative of Lord of the Flies, is by turns cinematic and intimate, and always thought-provoking.

🐚Story about a bunch of teens who get stranded on an island & must fight for survival.
🐚Fast-paced & character driven.
🐚Atmospheric.
🐚Antagonist is akin to Cersei Lannister in many ways.
🐚Has mental health rep.
🐚Strong motifs of inherent malevolence that can drive a person‘s desire for power & self-preservation.
🐚Ambiguous in certain respects, such as the finale.
🐚A bit too much teen romance drama for my tastes.
🐚Contemplative.
🐚3.5/5.

BiblioNyan @Readergrrl Whoa! That‘s pretty awesome! I‘ve never had the pleasure of meeting an author before. But I think it‘s awesome when they take time to meet & talk to kids. It can be very uplifting. 😃 6y
Readergrrl @BiblioNyan Yes, very uplifting!! Sorry about all the typos in my original message. No reading glasses makes texting a game of hit or miss!! 6y

Was going to finish reading this, but apparently it‘s being used as a pillow.

Look at his face! Total innocence while complete rejection of me taking my book back. 😭😭

Meanwhile Kiki is just snoozing on. 😂😂

Next book!

Sam Mishra awakes in the middle of the jungle with no idea how she got there or where she is exactly. One moment her team was being taken to a fencing tournament in Japan, the next she‘s here. As she wanders, she comes across her teammates. As they try to figure out the best way to survive, they quickly learn that they‘re not alone in the jungle.

I enjoyed "Lord of the Flies" so much, I thought I'd like this one, and I was right. Kept me in suspense from the very beginning until the end, I was just left hanging though with that ending.
