I was very eager to read this novel: a 🚺author who writes about a 🚺 MC with a Middle Eastern/North African tone to the fantasy world…but I kept translating this into a fantasy Taliban world. I was too distracted drawing parallels between the novel and what I‘ve learned about life under Taliban rule. Still there were beautiful scenes and I should reserve judgement until I read the next in the series. 2.5/5⭐️ I‘ll be mailing this out today!

MallenNC I‘ve read and enjoyed mysteries by this author but I haven‘t tried this series yet. 2d

I enjoyed this YA novel that follows a group of teens on their quest for answers about ley lines, Glendower, and even themselves. I liked Stiefvater‘s writing, but I can see that her writing has matured over the years: some confusing subplots and I really wanted to hear more about the villain, Barrington Whelk. Potentially such a great creepy character. Maybe next book in the series? Overall, I can see why this has been such a popular read!3.5/5⭐️

What a delightful story! I enjoyed exploring the sea realm with Mina as she navigated its depths and discovered its truth as the rescuer, not just the rescued. She was a wonderful character who embodied the best characteristics of a coming-of-age novel. The writing was lyrical and sweet while still carrying a strong message of faith-in-self, honor, and family. I highly recommend for young adults middle-grade and up. 4/5⭐️ #LMPBC #GroupX #Round15

Readergrrl @Endowarrior21 I apologize for just mailing this LMPBC book out today as I had meant to do so last week. I had a student pick it up off my desk to just “read a chapter” during study hall, but she loved it so much that I lent it to her for the long weekend. She got it back to me today, still in pristine condition, and I mailed it off today. I found it to be a very quick read! 1mo
DrexEdit Cool! Looking forward to this read. I also love the photo you posted. The aquarium at Dallas used to have a whole tank of these leafy sea dragons and they were my favorite creature to visit when I used to live near there. 1mo
Readergrrl @DrexEdit I enjoyed finding the photo. These are such lovely creatures and matched the vibe for my imagining of the book. I hope you enjoy it. A very nice retelling of a Korean fairytale that I‘ve not familiar with so I‘m going to go read that now! 🌊🐉 (edited) 1mo

Now I know why this has been recommended to me over and over by friends and strangers alike. I think this engaging and introspective novel is an allusion to the story of Jesus in the Bible and Ed Kennedy (the MC) to be a conflicted and reluctant Christ-figure (much like Harold Fry in The Unlikely Pilgrimage of HF-though he was more Pilgrim‘s Progress). I read it during an 8 hour road trip which made time fly! Book hangover!! 5/5⭐️ #LMPBC #GroupT

Readergrrl @Kimzey I just mailed it off to you. Sorry for delay, school just started and I‘ve been insanely busy. 🤪 1mo
Readergrrl 1/2 I wanted to add that I think the beauty of this novel is that Ed is about as flawed as any of us, yet he manages to help so many people. He wasn‘t strong, or smart, or even particularly handsome, but he was human and grew in his capacity to empathize with others. This is what made him successful as a “messenger” in his ability to have faith in the message he carried. 1mo
Readergrrl 2/2 As an atheist, I don‘t believe that Jesus was divine, but I do believe he was a real man, perhaps ordinary, but who‘s capacity to love made him extraordinary. If only more people would see that aspect of his humanity and know that we all have that capability. 1mo
vonnie862 Glad you liked it! I highly enjoyed it as well! 1mo

Just finished these two delightful novels for my#Round15 #GroupT and #GroupX #LMPBC selections. School just started for me, so I hope to have them in the mail by the weekend. Also will post my reviews this weekend. Enjoyed reading these while being off the grid up in Canada this summer. Not a bad book, just not my favorite. I almost gave it a pick but it took so long for me to get engaged, that I decided so-so was more appropriate. Oddly, I think the next in the series will be much better! I was frustrated with the character development at first, but eventually I clicked with the MC. I‘m glad to learn that Neve‘s story (I liked her dev. better than the MC) continues in the sequel, For the Throne, and I willread that too. 3/5⭐️

KateReadsYA I seriously love this cover :) i can't wait to see what it's all about. 2mo

1. This is a four-way tie that I just can‘t break: The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, The Elegance of the Hedgehog, The Road, and A Thousand Splendid Suns. I‘ve reread each and I cry just as hard!!
2. Historical Fiction followed closely by Fantasy/Magical Realism Fiction. I love escaping to and learning about another time/world.
3. I can NOT pick just one, so I‘ll pick the best I‘ve read recently: Matrix by Lauren Groff.

I cannot express how much I loved this novel. Beautifully written and engrossing story of a woman‘s growth as prioress and then abbess of destitute abbey. Marie is both large in body and ambition, yet loving and empathetic with her sisters. I found myself laughing and deeply affected by Marie‘s spiritual and feminist evolution. I listened to this beautifully narrated version and now will buy a hard bound copy to reread in the future. 5/5⭐️

I spent a couple of days sorting clothes and cleaning out my attic while listening to N&B. It made the time fly! I loved the world building and character development with its political and feminist subtext. Mara was not your typical nymphette protagonist, but a second-daughter, almost-nun, 30 year old coming to terms with family dynamics. A fun read and I recommend it if you like fairytale retellings. Reminiscent of Blue Beard & his wives! 3.5/5⭐️

How do I say how much I enjoyed this novel?! Just beautiful and I‘m buying another copy to keep in my personal library. The writing was reminiscent of Isabel Allende and I found myself stopping occasionally just to savor a passage. Lovely story with characters who grew on me and a plot that allowed me to escape into the story without looking back. The beginning was a tad slow, but once hooked, I couldn‘t stop reading! 4.5/5⭐️

I‘ve always enjoyed Miéville‘s novels and I was not disappointed in this collection of short stories. Some were much better than others, but as a whole, I really liked the sometimes bizarre imaginings of his many worlds in these stories. My all-time favorite anti-hero (and I LOVE a morally conflicted protagonist) is the Creature in Mary Shelley‘s Frankenstein. Well written and I highly recommend! I saw myself at various stages of my own life, as well as my mother and my grandmother, in Wolitzer‘s female protagonists in this collection of short stories. TheBookHippie I‘ve had these issues before- it‘s so annoying. Glad your back in business! 7mo
Readergrrl @TheBookHippie Thank you!!! I didn‘t realize how much I enjoyed scrolling through Litsy until I couldn‘t!! 7mo
TheBookHippie @Readergrrl SAME! I was so annoyed. 7mo

julieclair I would really really miss scrolling through Litsy if I suddenly couldn't. Glad you're up and running again! 7mo
Avanders Hello! Just checking to see if you‘ve received your #SpeculativeSpringSwap package .. it should have made its way to you already ☺️ 6mo
Readergrrl Hi @Avanders Yes, I did! I thought I had posted it here, but it seems I‘m still having some problems with the Litsy mobile app. I should have posted while on my desktop. I‘m very sorry! 6mo
Avanders Oh no worries - glad it arrived! ☺️☺️🧬🦠🌈🌳🌺 6mo

I love my #Blitsy swap package! Thank you so much! I‘ll be wearing the T-shirt tomorrow and I can‘t wait to add the books to my collection. I‘ve been sharing books with my students at school this month and I know they‘ll love to these additions! I‘ll be reading them first, though!! ❤️ The cards a great too! I‘ve never seen this set before. Thank you SO much!!

Chelleo Oooohh that new cover of TEWWG is gorg! Great package! 7mo
Butterfinger I'm glad you like it. 7mo
Readergrrl @Chelleo Isn't it though?!? 💖 I've taught with this novel multiple times at my high school and always used a school copy. I've never actually had my own personal copy! This is more perfect than @Butterfinger expected, I bet! Great choices!! 7mo
Readergrrl @Butterfinger I really do!! Thank you!! 7mo

More Bizarro than Bizarro | Vincenzo Bilof

Is anyone else‘s Litsy app acting bizarrely? Since yesterday evening, it randomly closes and won‘t save comments. If I click on one post I made, all is well. If I click on a different post I made, I‘m automatically booted off Litsy. It‘s very hard to read comments shared on my posts or to continue adding to a post. What is up?

Prairiegirl_reading Yes the same for me. The app hasn‘t been updated for three years from the looks of it and I‘m assuming it‘s not playing well with new iPhone update. Just a guess, I‘m not techie. 7mo
rabbitprincess Mine was crashing earlier today as well, first time in a very long time it‘s acted up. @rockpools has emailed Litsy about it 😊 7mo
rockpools Mine‘s throwing me out if I scroll back in the main feed. I‘ve emailed them… @Prairiegirl_reading - oh yes, the iPhone update could be it. I remember something going screwy a few years back after an update. 7mo

Twainy Mine will scroll a few times then exit the program. I haven‘t updated my iPhone. Is there a fix for this? Do I need to update the phone to 15-3-1? 7mo
Sweetkokoro Yup been having problems too. I‘m very certain it‘s because the app has been abandoned since it hasn‘t been updated in 3 years so it‘s becoming incompatible with newer phone updates. It‘s not our phones that are the issue it‘s literally the app and that it‘s becoming dead with lack of upkeep. 7mo
Readergrrl This makes me sad! I‘ve become very attached to Litsy, but I almost exclusively use the mobile app and not the desktop version. Hopefully the powers that be will address this?!?! 7mo
Clare-Dragonfly Ironically enough, it kept crashing earlier tonight as I scrolled down to this very post! Has anyone posted about this in the Onward Litsy Facebook group? They used to be pretty responsive there. 7mo
Readergrrl I checked out the Onward Litsy FB Group. It seems that LibraryThing has at least acknowledged that there is a problem. I will be heartbroken if this app is dissolved. 7mo

Another difficult task: minimizing my choices!! Short stories just seem like so much fun to read. I usually read novels, but I use select short stories with my students. These are (mostly) new collections. Please help me select, Group C!

Megabooks I planned on reading The Paper Menagerie this year anyway because it checks off a couple of challenges for me, so it‘s near the top. I‘ve always wanted to read the Diaz. I have already read the Oyeyemi, but they all sound interesting! I‘d be okay with any of these. 7mo
shadowspeak17 I‘d be happy to read any of these. The Paper Menagerie is the one I want to read the most, but I am a little unsure about it because of its length. Things We Lost in the Fire and Vampires in the Lemon Grove have both been on my TBR for a while, so they‘re also at the top for me. 7mo

I just received this petite volume of poetry in the mail. I‘m curious to read this collection of Glück‘s work! I‘ve loved her earlier poetry!
I‘m sorry, but I haven‘t finished Onegin yet. I am focusing on him this weekend! I‘m about 2/3 of the way through, so I think I‘ll finish very soon!

Pickpick

I struggled a little to get into this novel, but soon I was hooked and flew through the last 2/3! It was interesting how some storylines engaged me more than others. Very reminiscent of Station Eleven (5/5⭐️)with evocative writing and shifting narrators, settings, and time periods woven together to create a multilayered tale. It left me feeling pensive as I considered how even the most insignificant choices shape our lives. #LMPBC #GroupV
3.5/5⭐️

Readergrrl I will have this in the post today for @Alfrazier21 8mo

I had so much fun reading this (had to move away from the window the night I stayed up to 2am to finish!)! I loved World War Z and Devolution didn‘t disappoint! As a child, I was certain that Sasquatch was alive & well & living in CT. I saw myself in so many of the references and to this day I‘m known for my Tall Man love! I have multiple stickers, T-shirts, & a Squatch air freshener hanging from my rear view mirror. Yes, a perfect match for me!

Is anyone else watching the HBO series? Just stunning! I loved the book and the series does not disappoint!

Prairiegirl_reading I have it on my list. Glad to hear that it‘s good. 9mo
Cortg I rarely watch tv, but since I had read the book and my hubby hadn't watched it yet, we decided to start it. I'm more than halfway in and really enjoying it. It's been years since I've read the book so I don't remember it super well, which may help. I like the actors/actresses in the show. 9mo
Oryx I can't wait to watch this - coming to UK soon I think 9mo

DHill This is one of my favorite books so I‘ve held off watching the series. Happy to hear the positive review of the series. 9mo
AmyG I am a few episodes in. Like @Cortg I don‘t remember the story well as I read it a long time ago. So far the show is great. 9mo
Soubhiville I‘ve watched the first two episodes and it‘s really good so far! Like @AmyG and @Cortg it‘s been years since I read it. Someday I‘ll get around to a reread. 9mo
Readergrrl It‘s been years since I read the novel too, but now I want to reread it! Jevan and Frank just break my heart!! 9mo
Kimberlone Loved the book, loving the show! I think the finale comes out tonight so I will be finishing after work! 9mo
