Today, we tend to picture ancient Greece as a land of togas, lyres and plenty of philosophical pondering -- but even back then, people were annoyed with the likes of Socrates, Plato and other intellectual blowhards. Brilliant playwright Aristophanes mercilessly skewers pretentious intellectuals in his comic masterwork The Clouds.

Unruly, chaotic, & irreverent, this comedy had me chuckling at points (my inner child lives on), shaking my head at points, & wanting to come to Socrates‘ defence most of the time. This a total skewering of Socrates & the intellectual trends of Athens at the time, but at its core it‘s just mad about the Socratic/philosophic turn toward desecrating the gods, which is a caricature of Socrates' ideas. Is this why Plato didn't want poets around? 😅

batsy @Graywacke Apparently yes! Though I've not read enough Plato but I read that he believed it played a part. (Also an indication that I probably should read Plato at some point!) 3y

Aristophanes pokes fun at the Socratic scholars in this play, and it is very funny. It‘s not as good as Lysistrata, but still good. For April (Greece) in #readAroundtheworld
