The Last Book in the Universe
The Last Book in the Universe | Rodman Philbrick
8 posts | 24 read | 12 to read
This fast-paced action novel is set in a future where the world has been almost destroyed. Like the award-winning novel Freak the Mighty, this is Philbrick at his very best. It's the story of an epileptic teenager nicknamed Spaz, who begins the heroic fight to bring human intelligence back to the planet. In a world where most people are plugged into brain-drain entertainment systems, Spaz is the rare human being who can see life as it really is. When he meets an old man called Ryter, he begins to learn about Earth and its past. With Ryter as his companion, Spaz sets off an unlikely quest to save his dying sister -- and in the process, perhaps the world.

A dystopian post apocalyptic novel that brought to mind elements of the 80s movie Blade Runner but a better, and more interesting and hopeful story.

It's the story of an epileptic teenager nicknamed Spaz, who begins the heroic fight to bring human intelligence back to the planet. Highly recommend

"I know who the real hero is... It's an old man with a white beard and a walking stick and a heart so big it won't let him stop thinking he can change the world by writing down things in a book no one will ever read."

RaimeyGallant Nice quote. And welcome to Litsy! #LitsyWelcomeWagon Some of us put together Litsy tips to help new Littens navigate the site. It's the link in my bio on my page in case you need it. All in all this was a very enjoyable read. This was referred to me by a very good friend (Hi Holly! 🤘🏻). I would definitely recommend this book to anybody who likes interesting dystopian novels and younger readers such as preteen and up.

TheKidUpstairs Sorry to post this here, but I'm just wondering if you have another method of contacting TrashCanMan? I think you're his pen pal, right? He just posted a blurb that has me worried for him, in hoping there's someone who can get in touch and see if he's okay. 6y
BeansPage @TheKidUpstairs I just spoke with him tonight. He seems to be doing just fine. It sounded like he had a bad time for a little while but it sounds like he's getting himself back on track now. 😉 6y
TheKidUpstairs @TheReadingMermaid glad to hear that he's doing better, thank you, I'm glad he had you to talk to. 6y
BeansPage @TheKidUpstairs I just saw the post that you're referring to. I thought you were referring to a different one. I went ahead and emailed him hopefully he gets back to me soon. 6y

Happy Independent Book Store Day! Wish I was out participating but too much to do this weekend in preparation for vacation next week. Another one of my besties from NY will be out for a visit and you can bet we will be hitting all the 📚stores! Pics are from one of our favorite indie stores, The Last Book Store in Los Angeles.

InBooksILive Wow that is a beautiful book store! 😍 7y

Mehso-so

A decent dystopian novel to give struggling readers in place of The Giver.

I was asked to teach this as part of a curriculum pilot for my high school English class. It was an o.k. Book. Not one I would ever read or teach again. The plot was a little convoluted and the theme of how writing and reading are important are not present in the story.
