Pickpick

Conflicting loyalties are very well portrayed in this South African novel about a girl who witnesses her brother commit a crime. The characterization is impressive, including that of the main character‘s butch lesbian best friend. Spare, evocative prose with lots of Setswana words—there‘s a glossary at the back. My favourite line is about the shared experience of young women in the company of men: “We move like impalas among hunting lions.” 🇨🇦

“I‘ve never felt sorrier to drop the phone.”
I wondered about this wording: did she drop the phone on the floor? If so, why? Then, in a later chapter, the meaning became clear with the line:
“I put my finger on the receiver‘s drop button.” Ah! In South Africa, it appears that to drop can mean to disconnect. Two of the members of my book group are from South Africa, so I will ask for confirmation when I see them tonight.

Lindy Yes, to drop is to disconnect. Another uniquely South African usage in the novel is “robot” for a traffic light. 5y
LeahBergen I‘ve never heard either of those. Fascinating! 5y
Tanisha_A Had no idea either. It's interesting! Robot, haha 5y
Lindy @LeahBergen @Tanisha_A Etymology: Police officers used to control traffic at heavy flow intersections but with the introduction of traffic lights drivers coined the name robot police and over time it was just shortened to robots. 5y

Two books about rape were chosen for our discussion tonight at my YA book group. I always look forward to hearing what the other members—most of whom are university professors—have to say about our selections.

Excited to read this. My local independent book store ordered me a copy when they didn't have one in stock.

Perks of working in publishing: early access to books. “This Book Betrays My Brother” is actually a great book, despite its #YA label! I‘m so excited for everyone else to read it come the spring time! #ARC #diverselit #diversebooks
