Ian McDonald weaves a love story across an endless expanse with his science fiction novella Time WasA love story stitched across time and war, shaped by the power of books, and ultimately destroyed by it.In the heart of World War II, Tom and Ben became lovers. Brought together by a secret project designed to hide British targets from German radar, the two founded a love that could not be revealed. When the project went wrong, Tom and Ben vanished into nothingness, presumed dead. Their bodies were never found. Now the two are lost in time, hunting each other across decades, leaving clues in books of poetry and trying to make their desperate timelines overlap.

A book dealer finds a love letter from WWII in a discarded book. Trying to track down the sender and the recipient he stumbles across a mystery: they seem to be appearing in photos over a period of 120-odd years but hardly aging.

Beautifully lyrical novella.

Mehso-so

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ of 5 ⭐️s

Review based on an #ARC given to me for free by Tor.com Publishing

This novella essentially has two storylines, but it doesn‘t focus on Ben and Tom's story like I thought it would. Still, what there is of their story is lovely, and really McDonald‘s prose is gorgeous - it‘s just not quite the story I thought it‘d be. So YMMV folks, just saying.

Slightly dreamy and poetic, which is at odds with the story, but nonetheless enjoyable

Badly overwritten with too many details that I suppose were meant to make the setting pop. Wasn't feeling it so they just made for tedious reading.

So, DO NOT READ THE JACKET COPY on this one! This was my book for #ModernMrsDarcy for a book recommended by a librarian, and she gave me the same warning - it was a four star read for me, and then I read the jacket and understood, it is describing a completely different book. Four stars instead of five because wanted more of the chapters focused on Tom and Ben!

mcipher I read the blurb because I‘m obnoxious. 🙄 But based on your and other reviews, I am stacking it (the blurb honestly sounds awesome too). 😁 6y
bookwrm526 @mcipher the book in the blurb sounds AMAZING, this one was awesome too, it just wasn't the book on the blurb! I don't understand how jacket copy gets it so wrong sometimes 6y
mcipher It is really weird how often it‘s about something else! 6y
