From Liberty to Magnolia: In Search of the American Dream
From Liberty to Magnolia: In Search of the American Dream | Janice S Ellis Ph D
13 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
From Liberty to Magnolia: In Search of the American Dream vividly recounts the journey of an African-American woman from rural, segregated Mississippi through academia, corporate America, and politics. It is the story of how she triumphed even when, more often than not, the ugly realities of racism and sexism tried to deter her. This book tells the broader story, too, of how her life epitomizes what the Civil Rights Act and Equal Rights Amendment have meant and have not meant for blacks and women as she has lived through their maturation during the last 50 years. What better time than now to examine how these two seminal and defining events played out in the life of an ordinary African-American woman who believed in all of America's promises? What better moment than today to look deeply at the life of a woman who prepared herself and worked tirelessly to achieve her goals only to realize that many lay beyond her reach and that of most women and most blacks. From Liberty to Magnolia shows readers, especially aspiring women and minorities--with whom her story will have special resonance--how to navigate and ultimately embrace the challenges at every major crossroads and be triumphant.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first part of this book about Janice‘s early life. The description of her family and her childhood through her first marriage included aspects both heartbreaking and inspirational. I wasn‘t quite as engaged with the second part that focused more on her professional life, including both frustrating difficulties and impressive successes. Ultimately, it‘s a personal story full of hope and perseverance.

I really wanted to like this book. I was expecting something like Things I Should Have Told My Daughter, but the writing was uneven and badly needed an editor.

The first section, that dealt with her childhood, was my favorite and I felt like I was getting to know her. After that it became much less personal, and in the end, while it made an impressive resume I did not feel like I got to know Janice, the person.

Lcsmcat @Daisey Sorry. I hope you aren‘t upset on your friend‘s behalf. I hate writing reviews like this. 😞 6y
Daisey No apologies. I see many of the same things. I really enjoyed the personal story of the first part, but I feel a lot of that personal connection is lost in the second part. 6y

I‘m only in Chapter 2 and, while I‘m enjoying it, I wish it were better edited! What‘s a “ball eagle?”

Daisey Yeah, I‘ve found a few mistakes as well, but I‘ve finished the first half and really enjoyed the story so far. 6y
SandyW Yeah, those kind of errors always wind up pulling me out of the story. 6y
Eggs 😂😂 6y
Lcsmcat @SandyW Exactly! I‘m a paralegal so a good part of my work is editing and things like that tend to jump out at me and break the fourth wall, so to speak. 6y

I finally picked this book back up and finished the rest of Part I this afternoon. I‘m completely impressed by the perseverance and positivity demonstrated by Janice in this memoir.

Also, it appears I‘m inadvertently checking in about every 4 hours for the #25infive readathon. I‘ve made good progress today, but I need to set my books aside for a while after supper to do some school work this evening.

There's a Goodreads #giveaway available for the memoir I'm currently reading! Check it out at https://www.goodreads.com/giveaway/show/278347-from-liberty-to-magnolia-in-searc...

I had hoped to finish it by now, but life is crazy busy and I haven't had time to make much progress along with my other reading.

Lcsmcat Thanks for sharing! 6y

In this memoir the author has been describing her childhood, but she transitions for a few pages to how the land and home she now owns with her husband is a childhood dream come true. It‘s interesting to learn more about her life and see little mentions like this of my local community that is a part of her life today.

Texreader That‘s pretty awesome! 6y
SassyBookworm I have family from northeast Missouri! I‘ve been around those towns as a kid! How neat! Definitely need to check this book out! 6y
Daisey @Texreader It is! @Chrysta23 Most of the book takes place before she moved to Missouri, but it really is interesting. 6y

Janice and her husband go to my church, and I‘ve had the opportunity to hear her talk about the process of finishing this book throughout the last year. I got my copy today and hope to somehow fit it in with all of my other reading this month. I encourage you to watch the short interview from today on Kansas City Live to learn more.
