The Cocktail Waitress
The Cocktail Waitress | James M. Cain
Following her husband's death in a suspicious car accident, beautiful young widow Joan Medford is forced to take a job serving drinks in a cocktail lounge to make ends meet and to have a chance of regaining custody of her young son. At the job she encounters two men who take an interest in her, a handsome young schemer who makes her blood race and a wealthy but unwell older man who rewards her for her attentions with a $50,000 tip and an unconventional offer of marriage... The last, lost crime novel by one of the greatest noir novelists of all time, author of Mildred Pierce, Double Indemnity, and The Postman Always Rings Twice. Now published for the very first time - including an afterword by editor Charles Ardai!

I grabbed this #audiobook when it was on sale a couple of weeks ago. It‘s the lost final novel of James M. Cain and I really enjoyed it. I love the noirish vibe. I can‘t really put my finger on why exactly I liked this so much. The narrator was good but not great. I just got very wrapped up in Joan‘s very messy life and was rooting for her all the way. 4⭐️

Larkken I read double indemnity by Cain earlier this year and liked it. I‘ll have to try this one! 3y
rabbitprincess OMG super pulpy cover 😂 3y
JenlovesJT47 @Larkken that‘s on my TBR, might listen to the audiobook soon. Have you seen the movie? I started the audiobook of Mildred Pierce yesterday and have already listened to 5 hours of it, it‘s very good! The miniseries is great as well and a very faithful adaptation. 3y
JenlovesJT47 @rabbitprincess yes! 😆 I love it. I admit the cover convinced me to buy it lol. 3y

Mehso-so

I've been reading hard-boiled crime novels sort of as research, but also because I think they're interesting. This pulp-y novel was okay, but lacked...something.

#FFP The end of this book is so twisted that I can't even. It is the very blackest of noir and I lurved it! A lot. Fun and saucy and effed up in all the right ways.

This is James M. Cain's last, lost novel. This book rocked so hard! So juicy, so very very noir. This book got passed around by my friends and their friends and then some more. If you're looking for some good, saucy fun, look no further!

SGJ Didn't know about this one. Cool. Thanks. 8y
