Reading the Bible with Rabbi Jesus
Reading the Bible with Rabbi Jesus: How a Jewish Perspective Can Transform Your Understanding | Lois Tverberg
8 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
What would it be like for modern readers to sit down beside Jesus as he explained the Bible to them? What life-changing insights might emerge from such a transformative encounter? Lois Tverberg knows the treasures that await readers willing to learn how to read the Bible through Jewish eyes. By helping them understand the Bible as Jesus and his first-century listeners would have, she bridges the gaps of time and culture in order to open the Bible to readers today. Combining careful research with engaging prose, Tverberg leads us on a journey back in time to shed light on how this Middle Eastern people approached life, God, and each other. She explains age-old imagery that we often misinterpret, allowing us to approach God and the stories and teachings of Scripture with new eyes. By helping readers grasp the perspective of its original audience, she equips them to read the Bible in ways that will enrich their lives and deepen their understanding.

This books brings a concept that challenges how we believe and interpret the Bible. Western Christianity forgets the Jewish context, Hebraic style of thinking, and the "Jewishness" of the Messiah. It suffers for it. We miss connections and even deeper meanings by neglecting these things. The ideas presented within the pages challenge us to break free of Western thought and understand Scripture in the style and context it was written.

My next "Shabbat book". Great insight on page 25: "The Scriptures are meant for us to read but they were not written to our modern world." Looking forward to absorbing this book bit by bit.

Who doesn't love #bookmail? Now, where on the TBR does it go? I tend to put new books on top. Seems I shelve books and look at them 2,3, or 6 months later thinking, "Oh, why haven't I read that yet?" Then it hits me: I like the shiny new object.????

I have read this book slowly, leaning into the insights, as most clash brilliantly with many things I've learned over the years about the Bible and its translation. ✝️

Slajaunie This sounds interesting. 4y
Princess-Kingofkings @Slajaunie It really is. It explains culture and language and translation while revealing more of God to me. 4y
TheAromaofBooks A few years ago some friends decided to take a year and try to understand things from a Jewish perspective more. We celebrated the traditional Jewish feasts through the year (Feast of Booths was my fave), and it was really an amazing way to learn more about the rich culture & background of our faith. 4y
