This Caldecott Award Winning book is a great choice for a RA in the classroom. It‘s a story that shows why we should be thankful for what we have & stay humble no matter how big you have become. This book could also tie into the food cycle, since we see the relationship between small animals being hunted by big ones. This MF book would be best taught using UDL principles 3.2(highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, & relationships)

Vanvlieta & 3.3(Guide information processing, visualization & manipulation) & ESOL strategies 1(used pre-reading activities that activate former knowledge) & 12 (read to students) https://academicpartnerships.uta.edu/articles/education/reading-aloud-literacy-d... #UCFLAE3414SP21 🐭🐯 3y

Once a Mouse by Marcia Brown is a great RA option for our younger students. This book is a RF picture book that has won a Caldecott award. Once a Mouse is a story about a man who turns a mouse into bigger and bigger animals to help them. Once the mouse becomes a tiger, he begins to become ungrateful for everything the man has done for him.

BRaulerson This is a great story to remind our students to be grateful to what we are given, which is also expressed in this standard https://www.cpalms.org/Public/PreviewStandard/Preview/5857
The ESOL strategy I would use for this story is using direct instruction. Modeling this behavior from the story with different scenarios that could be more relatable, could help to ensure the comprehension. #UCFLAE3414F19

DrSpalding You made good use of the wonderful resources in the curriculum materials center. Another award winner that would work nicely with the theme of being grateful. 4y

This book made me think about when I was a child and I would try to show off my accomplishments or something extremely cool that I had which nobody else I knew did. One thing I never thought about was that even though the things I had technically belonged to me, I would not have had them if it were not for my parents, or friends that had given them to me

This award winning book was not only interesting to look at, it also was a great lesson to share with young readers because it embodies the way human nature tends to be. We are prideful, and sometimes forget the people in our lives who have helped us get to the places we are at today. When the mouse was turned into a tiger, he was so prideful that he forgot the hermit was the reason for it all, so in the end he became a mouse again.

Once a Mouse is an Indian fable retold by Marcia Brown. This book one the Caldecott award! This TL story would be great for S or DR! In this story, an old hermit has the power to change a mouse into a cat, dog, and tiger! I think children would have fun acting out the different animals in this book. The downside is there aren‘t a lot of resources to go along with this book. However, I did find a story map that goes along with this book.

giont The teacher has the option to choose from different levels of the story map as well. Story maps are always a great resource to help comprehend story structure! https://www.teachingbooks.net/clp.cgi?master_id=11538&lf_id=9 UDL principles that fit this are 3.2 (Highlight patterns, crucial features, big ideas and relationships) & 6.2 (support planning and strategy development). ESOL strategies 7 (Show students how to use graphic organizers like 5y
giont semantic mapping and imaging) & 30 (encourage the use of diagrams and drawings as aids to identify concepts and seeing relationships). #LAE3414sp19 5y
DrSpalding Much better explanation of the strategies and principles. Story maps are graphic organizers that aid comprehension. 5y

This scene shows that the man wants to help the mouse, but later he probably shouldn't have helped the mouse.

Caldecott and was written in 1961. This book sends out a great message that we need to be grateful for things or what people do for us. The book begins with an old man thinking and out of nowhere a mouse is running for its life. Other animals try to attach the animal but the old man changes the mouse time and time again until he's a tiger. However when he's a tiger is ungrateful for it and the old man changes him back to a mouse.

It is easy to to let power take over, but it is important to not get carried away with it. Once A Mouse by Marcia Brown exemplifies this statement by telling a story of an itty bitty mouse who, over time, transforms into a majestic tiger who gets carried away with the power he was given. This book would be great as a DR because your students will be able to bring the characters and plot to life and can better understand the moral of the story.
