This realistic fiction book was the 2003 Newbery honor award, and would be great for IR in the class. The story is about how a newcomer makes some friends and they begin to take a stand against a new construction. A new pancake house is to be built upon the burrows of owls who live there, and they do everything in their power to protect the owls and stop the construction from happening, in both conventional and unconventional ways. #ucflae3414sp18

Loved this book as a kid! Great modern fantasy (twist in the traditional literature) book was on the 2006 sunshine state young reader‘s list and would be a good independent read for students. The story is about a princess who is told she has marry a terrible prince, so she runs away. She meets another prince...but he‘s a frog and she kisses him to turn him back. Except she turned into a frog as well and then they go on a quest to find the witch.

This is a modern fantasy book that would be great as a read aloud for the class. It‘s a story about a beautiful fish who was asked to share one of his scales. He refuses, but then gets advice and reluctantly gives away his scale. Which then others came asking, until he only had one pretty scale left. While he may not have been as “beautiful” as he was in the beginning, he now has friends and is so much happier. #ucflae3414sp18

This book is a Ukrainian folklore traditional literature being retold and illustrated by Jan Brett with amazing borders this book could be used for a dramatic reenactment. This story is really cute it talks about how a grandmother, Baba, knits mittens for her grandson. When he loses a mitten, many animals decide to use the mitten to stay warm. The borders are great because they give a little bit of foreshadowing of what is to come.
