The One and Only Ivan | Katherine Applegate
post image

The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate is an incredible F novel of a silverback gorilla, Ivan. Ivan and his friends at The Big Top Mall face harsh conditions and harsh realities. It is up to Ivan to help not only himself, but his new little elephant friend as well. #lae3414sp19

jessicabaksh UDL principle 3.2 fits well with this novel because it talks about critical features, big ideas, and relationships and ESOL strategy 36 fits with this because the novel leaves room to ask high level thinking questions 6y
WoodsKatie This is truly one of my favorite books I‘ve read this semester. I think students should read it and connect with it. Discuss what is important and why? Could this be possible? Great for LC!!!! Great post! 6y

Muhammad Ali | James Buckley, Jr.
post image

Who Is Muhammad Ali? would do great as an IR in your classroom library. This B chapter book will interest your young readers who want to get to know Muhammad Ali‘s background and how he came to be the man he was. #lae3414sp19

jessicabaksh UDL principle 3.1 (activate or supply background knowledge) works well with this novel because of the information that lies within the text 6y
jessicabaksh ESOL strategy 38 (assign short readings for homework) would work well with this book since it is a chapter book but the chapters are quite short so it will be manageable for your esol students 6y

With the bravery of a great white shark, this little black fish shares his bravery with his fellow little red fish and helps them overcome their fear of being eaten. This was such a cute book to read. Swing is a F Caldecott Medal picture book that will leave you with the message that you can overcome anything you put your mind to. Perfect for a RA to the younger influential crowd. #lae3414sp19

jessicabaksh UDL principle 8.3 (foster collaboration and community) supports this book well because of how the little fish brings his buddies together to overcome their fear 6y
jessicabaksh ESOL strategy 1 (teach questioning for clarification) can be integrated with this book. Allowing your esol students a chance to ask questions can help them understand the language and material better and this is a good book to practice that with 6y

The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and the story of life that is told is one that everyone should read no matter your age. This RF Pura Belpré honor book would do amazing as an IR in your classroom. Your students will love the message that is being told. #lae3414sp19

jessicabaksh UDL principle 9.3 (develop self-assessment and reflection) supports this book because of the nature of the story. Looking at life from a new perspective and trying to understand the circle of life 6y
jessicabaksh ESOL strategy 9 (teach note-taking strategies: t-lists, time lines, etc.) also supports this book because of the sequence it follows. Your students can create time lines of their own lives kind of like how the child does in this story 6y

This Is Not My Hat, a F Caldecott Medal, tells the story of a little fish who stole a hat from a big fish and thinks he‘s going to get away with it. He puts his trust in someone not knowing it will backfire. This is a good book for a RA or even a DR because kids will take away from the moral of the story. #lae3414sp19

jessicabaksh UDL principle 3.2 (highlight patterns, critical features, big ideas, and relationships) aligns well with this book. This message of honesty and trust in others are exemplified in this story 6y

Jane Yolen has over three hundred published children‘s book and here is another one. You Nest Here With Me is possibly one of the cutest P books I have read. The rhymes and words she uses along with the soft illustrations are beyond heartwarming. An amazing RA bedtime book for the little ones. #lae3414sp19

jessicabaksh UDL principle 7.2: optimize relevance, value, and authenticity supports this book well. The nature of this book has all three components 6y
jessicabaksh ESOL strategy 14: simplify your speech by making it slower and redundant also pairs well with this book. Slowing this book down a bit will help your esol students feel more comfortable with the language used in it 6y

jessicabaksh UDL principle 2.1: clarify vocabulary and symbols aligns well with this book because of the specific vocabulary Yolen uses 6y
jessicabaksh ESOL strategy 22: give enough wait time for second language learners to respond to questions aligns well with this book as well because the question “where have the unicorns gone?” Appears very often. jessicabaksh UDL principle 1.3: offer alternatives for visual information pairs well with this book. Along with the words that go along with each letter, there are pictures that reinforce what is being said (edited) 6y
jessicabaksh ESOL strategy 16: integrate speaking, listening, reading, and writing activities goes well with this picture book because you can create many lessons and activities that will support your esol students that have all four components 6y

Fire! Fuego! Brave Bomberos | Susan Middleton Elya

Fire! Fuego! Brave Bomberos is possibly one of my new favorite picture books. With rhymes, the author Susan Middleton Elya incorporates Spanish into this RF picture book. This is a good book for a RA in your classroom, especially during Hispanic Heritage Month. #lae3414sp19

jessicabaksh This coincides with UDL principle 2.4: promote understanding across languages. The incorporation of Spanish allows both native English speakers and EL students to thoroughly enjoy the book while learning at the same time! 6y
