Sam, Bangs, and Moonshine left a mark on me. This RF picture book has amazing illustrations done by Evaline Ness, who is also the author, and she tells a story about a girl who is constantly lying. Her imagination with her compulsive lying causes her to nearly lose two of her friends in a horrific accident. I believe this book is best as both a RA and an IR. Your students will gain much from hearing you read this and by reading it themselves

It is easy to to let power take over, but it is important to not get carried away with it. Once A Mouse by Marcia Brown exemplifies this statement by telling a story of an itty bitty mouse who, over time, transforms into a majestic tiger who gets carried away with the power he was given. This book would be great as a DR because your students will be able to bring the characters and plot to life and can better understand the moral of the story.

How impactful can a fresh haircut really make a person feel? In this RF picture book by Derrick Barnes, Crown: an ode to the fresh cut reaches out to its young male members of the African American community through hyperboles to help them with their self-esteem.
