Edgar Award nominee: Fresh out of prison, John Dortmunder plans a heist that could mean war in this thriller by Mystery Writers of America Grand Master Donald E. Westlake John Dortmunder leaves jail with ten dollars, a train ticket, and nothing to make money on but his good name. Thankfully, his reputation goes far. No one plans a caper better than Dortmunder. His friend Kelp picks him up in a stolen Cadillac and drives him away from Sing-Sing, telling a story of a $500,000 emerald that they just have to steal. Dortmunder doesnt hesitate to agree. The emerald is the crown jewel of a former British colony, lately granted independence and split into two nations: one for the Talabwo people, one for the Akinzi. The Akinzi have the stone, the Talabwo want it back, and their UN representative offers a fine payday to the men who can get it. Its not a simple heist, but after a few years in stir, Dortmunder could use the challenge.

Starting this one next. Humorous mystery.

The_Book_Ninja There‘s a 70s film with the same name. I‘ve not seen it but I have the soundtrack. Wonder if it‘s the same story 11mo
Blueberry Just looked it up and it is the same. The 9th in the series is a movie also.. I wonder if many more are? 11mo

I heard these were fun, and the first one is short, so I‘m starting this tonight.

Pickpick

An article on Tor.com ages ago sang the praises of the Dortmunder books, and I thought “Hey, I like a good caper!” so I put the first one on my Kindle and forgot about it for awhile.

I‘m glad I finally started it, because I had a lot of fun. It is basically a Cozy Heist novel. Professional criminal Dortmunder is hired to swipe the Balabomo Emerald. Comic complications ensue. That‘s it, but that was enough.

A fun caper novel that is darker than the movie.
