Boar Island
Boar Island: An Anna Pigeon Novel | Nevada Barr
13 posts | 16 read | 5 to read
Anna Pigeon, in her career as a National Park Service Ranger, has had to deal with all manner of crimes and misdemeanors, but cyber-bullying and stalking is a new one. The target is Elizabeth, the adopted teenage daughter of her friend Heath Jarrod. Elizabeth is driven to despair by the disgusting rumors spreading online and bullying texts. Until, one day, Heath finds her daughter Elizabeth in the midst of an unsuccessful suicide attempt. And then she calls in the cavalry---her aunt Gwen and her friend Anna Pigeon. While they try to deal with the fragile state of affairs---and find the person behind the harassment---the three adults decide the best thing to do is to remove Elizabeth from the situation. Since Anna is about to start her new post as Acting Chief Ranger at Acadia National Park in Maine, the three will join her and stay at a house on the cliff of a small island near the park, Boar Island. But the move east doesn't solve the problem. The stalker has followed them east. And Heath (a paraplegic) and Elizabeth aren't alone on the otherwise deserted island. At the same time, Anna has barely arrived at Acadia before a brutal murder is committed by a killer uncomfortably close to her. BOAR ISLAND is a brilliant intertwining of past and present, of victims and killers, in a compelling novel that only Nevada Barr could write.

Anna Pigeon is working on 2 cases and getting beat up in the process. 1 is the murder of an abusive man (and he didn‘t go down easily and 2 is the cyber stalking of a friend‘s teenager. Fairly fast paced and entertaining but I had difficulty in believing the craziness of one individual 🤷🏻‍♀️

1. Whatever I get my hands on
2. Mostly the library
3. Yes, especially during my commute
4. Libby, cloud library, hoopla
5. I was pleased when a book I‘d already started reading was announced as the February selection for the mystery book club at the library, but last night I realized I can‘t go to the meeting. I might finish it anyway, or more likely I‘ll return it and try again later. ⬇️

Love the background photo!

Susanita Like some previous Littens, I can‘t really get into this book. I‘ve loved this series for years, but this one is a slog. Maybe it‘s the secondary characters? I didn‘t really like them in the previous book, and now they‘re back. 5y
Megabooks My mom hasn‘t enjoyed her last couple as much. 5y

ljuliel Which book of Krueger‘s would you recommend ? I really liked this one. 5y
Blueberry I literally like everything else he had written. I am partial to his Cork O'Connor series though because it is set in northern Minnesota where I was born. It also has two of my favorite genres: mystery and Native American. 5y

Anna Pigeon has been to many parts of the #USA for her job, but so far there hasn‘t been a story set in Nevada. 🤣 #letstraveljuly

Although I love Nevada Barr's Ranger Anna Pigeon series, this one was a "meh" for me. The story was focused on other characters and did not focus on the national park it was based in.

Any fellow Litsy peeps in love with the 'By the Book' podcast with Kristin Meinzer and Jolenta Greenburg?

They read a popular self-help book and follow the advice in said book for 2 whole weeks. Then they describe their experiences, discuss the pros and cons, and weigh in on whether or not they would recommend the book to others.
I'm slightly addicted to them..I listened to all 3 seasons in a week!

dariazeoli I‘m listening to my first episode now. Thanks for the rec! 6y
ItsAnotherJen @dariazeoli Yay! I hope you like it. Its so interesting to get their take on some of the books I hear other people are obsessing about. 6y

This was my first Anna Pigeon book and I thought it was alright but wasn‘t blown away. It was set in Acadia National Park and I was hoping there would be more background on the setting than there was. It was also a little more violent than I was expecting. I may try again though with an earlier book in the series as I like the premise of a mystery series starring a National Park Ranger. As a side note, Barbara Rosenblat was a great narrator.

What an interesting and captivating book! I actually really enjoyed all the different perspectives, and I thought it added a lot to this book! For me the pacing was good, I didn't feel like there was ever a time where the plot lagged, which was very enjoyable. Overall a good mystery / thriller book.

I definitely enjoyed this book, but I love Nevada Barr for 2 reasons: 1) Anna Pigeon, 2) her books are steeped in whatever place they are set. There was little of Anna in this book and, despite having the gorgeous Acadia to work with, it could have taken place anywhere.

BethFishReads I'll read it anyway, but bummer 9y

Protagonist Anna Pigeon is one of my longest standing literary friends, since her first appearance in Track of the Cat ('94). This latest, set in Acadia National Park, was a solid mystery (two, actually) but didn't feature enough of the park OR Anna! I think I still prefer her older titles...
