Lizard Radio | Pat Schmatz
Fifteen-year-old bender Kivali has had a rough time in a gender-rigid culture. Abandoned as a baby and raised by Sheila, an ardent nonconformist, Kivali has always been surrounded by uncertainty. Where did she come from? Is it true what Sheila says, that she was deposited on Earth by the mysterious saurians? What are you?people ask, and Kivali isnt sure. Boy/girl? Human/lizard? Both/neither? Now shes in CropCamp, with all of its schedules and regs, and the first real friends shes ever had. Strange occurrences and complicated relationships raise questions Kivali has never before had to consider. But she has a giftthe power to enter a trancelike state to harness the "knowings" inside her. She has Lizard Radio. Will it be enough to save her? A coming-of-age story rich in friendships and the shattering emotions of first love, this deeply felt novel will resonate with teens just emerging as adults in a sometimes hostile world.

A book about a society that forces you to choose your gender by 10 years old.Somehow, a child is rated by feminine and masculine behaviour and if you get a certain number the child is forced to have a transition. If the child does not comply or conform by 18, he/she/them are imprisoned. Lizard plans to fight the system.

Finally, a book which children can see that they can be comfortable in their own skin and not be ashamed.

Kudos Mx. Schmatz.

ofbooksandme I'm so glad you like it! I stalked you a bit here and on Good Reads so it's nice to see it paid off 😁 I think a tea should arrive by Amazon might have been delayed because of the bad weather 6y

Shout out to Liberty. This is one of the first books I remember her talking about on her podcast. Giving it a try.

I finished this book a week ago and I‘m still reeling at how validated I feel. I‘ve always been self-conscious about being genderqueer (and sometimes I doubt if I should even identify) because I present as female and don‘t do anything to change my outward appearance. But it doesn‘t change how I feel every day in my body. I don‘t even talk about it because no one would know if I didn‘t tell them. The protagonist feels the same & I love her for it.

A dystopian novel (with a dash of metaphysics) that had me second-guessing myself pretty much to the end. Loved the open-ended way it explored themes of gender identity, community, and politics. Light-handed social commentary, with plenty of room to think more deeply. I'd love to see a sequel that focuses on another area of this world!

Almost 70% in and I *still* can't tell if this one character is a good guy or bad guy. It's disturbingly delightful! #TheLiteraryOthers #ownvoices #nonbinary #queer #lgbT #dystopian #YA
