I loved these kooky, multi-faceted characters and the sticky situations they ended up in. What a fun read! #TheLiteraryOthers #quirkyreads

Mehso-so

This stretched me as a reader. Loved Maria's snarky, apathetic tone and the dark humor. The first half was fantastic! There was an interesting shift halfway through, but from there to the abrupt ending, I was underwhelmed. I liked that it didn't feel like Binnie is trying to educate readers on trans issues: Maria is who she is. Through her, readers pick up on what that's like. #TheLiteraryOthers #ownvoices #translit #ownvoices #lgbT

Bibliogeekery I also felt mixed in this one, as did my queer book club. I wanted to like it more than I did - though there were some great parts to it. #transbooks 8y
lovelybookshelf @Bibliogeekery Yeah...the first half was just GREAT. I wanted to make everyone who knows my spouse read it! 😉 I bet your book club discussion was great. There's definitely a lot of talk about. 8y
Bibliogeekery Yes. The first part was really strong! 8y

Omg I want to give a copy of this book to everyone I know. Here the main character is talking about having to "prove" she's "Really, Truly Trans." Read this aloud to my spouse; it really resonated with her. ? #TheLiteraryOthers #ownvoices #lgbT #transgender #queer

Almost 70% in and I *still* can't tell if this one character is a good guy or bad guy. It's disturbingly delightful! #TheLiteraryOthers #ownvoices #nonbinary #queer #lgbT #dystopian #YA

Bornstein chronicles her time spent in (and escape from) Scientology, her exploration of her own gender identity, and the darker aspects of her life (addiction, anorexia, sadomasochism, suicide attempts). It's candid, gritty, dark; yet Bornstein's humor often has you laughing where you feel like you shouldn't. Provides lots of first-person insight into early feminist and trans rights movements. #TheLiteraryOthers #transgender #lgbT #queer #memoir

If I Was Your Girl | Meredith Russo
Pickpick

This could *almost* be described as a typical YA coming-of-age story, but the protagonist, Amanda, is a trans girl. AND, she lives in the Bible Belt. Russo has written an engaging, hopeful novel that is, at the same time, heartbreakingly realistic. It's a tough read at times, but this is an important, authentic voice. (The author's note at the end is a must-read. Do not skip.) #TheLiteraryOthers #ownvoices #translit #lgbT

Oh my stars, the BEAUTY of this novel. Everything - the magical realism, the atmosphere - absolutely stunning. It took my breath away; I didn't want the book to end. Like Aimee Bender meets Laura Esquivel, yet still a fresh, unique voice. MUST READ! #TheLiteraryOthers #translit #queer #ownvoices #transbooks #lgbT

Currently reading for #TheLiteraryOthers. 1933 gay modernist pulp novel... pretty odd so far.

Just some of my October TBRs; I'm unofficially participating in #TheLiteraryOthers, a month long reading event focusing on glbt authors and characters. Of course I can't decide what to start with, and I'm also still working on Born to Run. I'll probably spend more time trying to pick something than actually reading!

Zelma Some really great choices in there! 👍 8y
tricours Ooh, do say if you stumble across some good glbt books! (I find too many of them way too stereotyped and bland) 8y
bookishkai @tricours I read a lot of glbt books; memorable ones from recent reading include You Know Me Well by David Levithan and Nina LaCoeur, the All for the Game trilogy, and Alan Cumming's Not my Father's Son. Perennial faves are The Sea of Light by Jenifer Levin, Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg, and Paul Monette's autobiographical stuff (Becoming a Man, Borrowed Time, and Last Watch of the Night). 8y
