The Reluctant Fortune-Teller | Keziah Frost
A retired accountant becomes the towns fortune-teller in this witty and charming debut Norbert Zelenka has always lived life on the sidelines. Its why at seventy-three years old hes broke and alone except for the company of a Chihuahua. But when Carlottas Clubthree strong-willed seniors with plenty of time on their handsdecide to make Norbert their latest project, he reluctantly agrees to their scheme: establishing himself as the towns fortune-teller. Soon his life begins changing in unexpected ways. It turns out that years of observing other people make Norbert an excellent card reader. As Norberts lonesome world expands with new friendships and a newfound self-confidence, he finally finds himself in a place where he belongs. But disaster looms on the horizon. When a troubled young woman goes missing after a bad reading, Norbert must find a strength beyond the cards to bring her home safely. Norbert is a widower in his 70s who is struggling to pay his bills. The local elderly busybody convinces him to use his ability to read people well by becoming a fortune teller. I was looking for a light, fluffy palette cleanser and this fit the bill. Plus it‘s nice to read a book that focuses on older folks.

I restricted myself to books on the floor by my bed when I looked for purple books for #ispy. @StaceGhost

@AprilMae Have you played? If not, do you have any blue books?

Thoroughly enjoyed this one! It‘s the first book I‘ve finished during the #24B4Monday Readathon and thankfully it‘s helped me get over my #readingslump. 💜🖤

Finally home! First things first... headphones in, audiobook playing + dinner in the oven. I have no real set schedule for this weekend, so I‘m predicting that I‘ll be jumping around genres, books, and platforms.

Panpan

I'm always reluctant to pan a book. I can appreciate how difficult it is to create a world and characters that people are interested in spending time in/with.

I found the characters in this story unsympathetic, and the plot line simplistic and annoying. I wound up dropping this one at the mid-point.

A good lazy Sunday book. The elderly characters are endearing and despite the obstacles each character faces, there‘s never any doubt that the story will have a happy ending. The book‘s 52 (like a deck of cards) chapters are short and that makes it hard to resist just one more chapter until you realize you‘re already at the end.

I won a copy of this book and it came with a deck of cards and fortune telling instructions. Nice, eh?
Also, it‘s amusing how many books come up when you start a search with “The Reluctant”.

SandyW I love that! Sounds like a fun read. 7y
LauraJ @SandyW I‘m about 100 pages in and it‘s a very nice, cozy read. 7y
