Following the death of her grandmother, Freya spent this Christmas alone for the first time in years. Freya & her brother were raised by their grandparents after their parents died in an accident & Freya in particular was very close to her grandmother - living in the same house & running a bakery company 'Past Time Treats' together. Now both grandparents are dead & her brother has his own family, (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf so when a last-minute job is offered to cater for a Twelfth Night ball at nearby Hill House, Freya decides to take it.

There she meets charming estate manager, Callum, & Jasper the loveable terrier, & when she is snowed in whilst preparing the Regency-themed cakes, she experiences vivid dreams which seem to be from another time. It seems Hill House is a very special place & it just may show Freya the way forward.

OutsmartYourShelf Now I'm not generally a big reader of romance, but I loved this! Both Freya & Callum were adorable characters (along with Jasper the dog) & I think the timeslip & Christmasy aspects really gave it something extra. It would make a great Christmas season film! Although it works perfectly well as a standalone read, I will definitely be going back & reading the whole series at some point. 5🌟 10h

Gissy It is part of a series, do I have to read it in order? 10h
OutsmartYourShelf @Gissy No, this is the first one I've read & it works as a standalone too. Not sure about the first 4, but I'll probably read those in order. (edited) 9h

A soft pick. Jeneva is a good go to for a medium nonsensical popcorn thriller. The ending was creepy enough that I had to finish in the morning.

I‘ve decided to shamelessly review some of my son‘s seasonal books to hit some bingo prompts. This is a Halloween book. It makes no sense, “you‘re my special spider. To me there‘s nothing nicer, you‘re my candy super sweet”. Really out of ideas here. Also why is the cover not a pie?

reading_rainbow My daughter had all these books when she was a baby 🥹 so cute 1d

I‘ve decided to shamelessly review some of my son‘s seasonal books to hit some bingo prompts. I thought this 1 was just fall but it‘s actually Thanksgiving. My personal favorite but especially because there‘s a “You‘re my little marshmallow” and my son is Marshall and his grandma calls him Marshmallow. In general it‘s cute and all the elements tie in Tgiving & explain it as family & gathering etc

Melismatic Apt name for the book! So cute!! 🥰 1d

Kathryn has recently split from her husband, & on a night out with a friend, meets Todd who is an IT expert including carrying out work for the local police department. Their relationship never really gets off the ground, but when Kathryn wants to call it off, the charming, helpful, affable Todd shows the other side to his personality, & due to his IT expertise he has access to her phone, her security cameras, & even her car. (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf Everywhere she goes, Todd soon turns up, & when she has finally had enough & files for a restraining order, things become really dark & Kathryn learns that she is not the first woman he has done this to.

I found this a compelling read but one that made me extremely anxious whilst reading it - it was almost like an intense episode of 'Criminal Minds'. I know this is based on a true story, & it is frightening to think that there seems to be very

OutsmartYourShelf little protection for victims of stalking. What there is, is woefully inadequate, & basically ties the victim up in judicial knots & favours the perp. It was in equal parts infuriating & exasperating how Todd was able to use the law to harass his victims. I can only commend anyone who is resilient & strong enough to take cases like this to court & fight on in the face of such obstacles, it must be harrowing. 4🌟 2d

I am stunned by the ending. I want to like it? I feel like it makes a particular point.. but the rest of it was so good. the “sisterhood”, Sloan‘s laments on “mom guilt” were so spot on it was nearly unbearable

“What kind of person would you be if you didn‘t choose your daughter over everything?” “..A man”

A sorority takes part in arcane rituals, an adjunct sociology professor researches their successful alumni and comes to a horrific conclusion

5feet.of.fury And I will add that even though that quote rang true #notallmen, my husband is the stay at home parent & I joked when I went back to work that “I loved being a dad” but then my own brain makes me think im a terrible person if I‘m doing something other than parenting or working. It‘s exhausting. Anyway- 3d

RavenclawOwlCat @TheAromaofBooks nice!! That‘s great for someone like me who doesn‘t get through very many books a year! 3d
TheAromaofBooks @RavenclawOwlCat - Yes!! And a lot of people, including myself, actually work on the boards all year round instead of trying to finish one a month. So definitely do whatever makes it the most fun for you!! And if you'd like to be added to the tag list, just let me know!! (edited) 3d

This is an interesting & informative read on the subject of where the prevailing image of the archetypical witch came from. The author argues that the modern portrayal of witches owes more to the Greek & Roman eras than it does to the Medieval.

There is also a discussion of the lasting change in their representation from the Greek idea of witches as attractive & seductive (for example Hecate & Circe) to the Roman portrayals as (continued)

OutsmartYourShelf ugly, old hags (for example Erictho & Canidia) & the author links this to the patriarchal & misogynistic set-up of the Roman world & their fear of women with power.

There is also a brief discussion of witches in modern media such as the musicals 'The Wizard of Oz' & 'Wicked', & TV show 'Charmed' to name a few, but in the main the Roman hangover seems to prevail.

OutsmartYourShelf It was well-researched & mentioned quite a lot of information that I wasn't aware of before. 4🌟

First Frost | Jennifer Estep

Pickpick

A prequel novella to the Mythos Academy series

Gwen has psychometry powers, when she touches something or someone she can see that person‘s memories. In First Frost she finds out a classmate is being abused when she asks to borrow a hairbrush. After a tragic accident her grandmother sends her to a boarding school for magical teens including Valkyries, Spartans & Amazons it all seemed very WEDNESDAY (Netflix) which is my vibe rn, will continue.
