bailed 50% / 2:40:30: The story's so slow. Relationships aren't being developed. I just can't. Admittedly, I'm far from the target audience; but, I read a fair amount of children's, middle grade, and YA, so it's not like I never like books in those target ranges. . . .
“In the loves of humans, there are moments that feel very much apart from the majority of moments.”
I also really appreciate the use of children characters. This makes it so easy for young readers to connect.
I really like this book for the way it‘s emphasizes community and all the “good stuff.” So many times books can get lost in the trials and tribulations, but this book is a breath of fresh air.
This was super scattered and I honestly don‘t even know what was going on in this book. This wasn‘t really for me.
A fun adventure about a kid with no friends whose world is collapsing around him, literally. An important story about helping in times of despair.
There really needs to be a word for when you want to like a book more than you do...Eggers is an accomplished writer & this book is well-written & very quotable. There‘s a couple of mostly likable main characters, Gran & Catalina, that are not done any favors by a plot that reads like a jigsaw puzzle where none of the pieces, all interesting in of themselves, quite fit together in a coherent whole. The story just doesn‘t work. Bummer.
Can we all just agree that RBG is awesome and that most any book which references her, by name or drawing or whatever, must be the tiniest bit awesome too?!? Love this!
“He just wanted a name that was a name—easily understood, easily spelled.”
So Dave Eggers wrote a middle grade book and it looks and sounds fantastic. Look at this great cover! Don‘t you want to know what‘s going on? I do! It‘s about a boy named Gran who moves with his family to a town called Carousel. Like any place, it‘s full of secrets only these secrets are putting the town in danger. It‘s up to Gran and a girl named Catalina Catalan to find a way to save their town. Sounds good, right?!? I‘m definitely reading it!
The cover makes me think this may be similar to the borrowers.
