Either/Or
Either/Or: A Fragment of Life | Soren Kierkegaard
In Either/Or, using the voices of two characters - the aesthetic young man of part one, called simply 'A', and the ethical Judge Vilhelm of the second section - Kierkegaard reflects upon the search for a meaningful existence, contemplating subjects as diverse as Mozart, drama, boredom, and, in the famous Seducer's Diary, the cynical seduction and ultimate rejection of a young, beautiful woman. A masterpiece of duality, Either/Or is a brilliant exploration of the conflict between the aesthetic and the ethical - both meditating ironically and seductively upon Epicurean pleasures, and eloquently expounding the noble virtues of a morally upstanding life.

Either/Or: A Fragment of Life | Soren Kierkegaard

In the old tradition of (Calvinist) theology, Christ was taken as the relative word that could be understood and reasoned with. Everything was a matter of, as he says, starting over every time, using different logical techniques, or perhaps just expressing yourself somehow and motivating yourself to use all means available. The discoveries of this logic is as great as Wittenstein's Tractatus and must be regarded with the same kind of facination.

I have always been shocked by the narrative of Kierkegaard's life; but we realize that it has its consummation in the present. We learn so much from logic, but Kierkegaard's logic is based on a relativity that we recognize in Christianity. Still, we can grow in power: as we learn more, everything becomes more natural, and the truths that we came up with with one logic, get subsumed under a logic that is free from the consequences of that logic.

rockpools 🎉🎉🎉 Don‘t suppose you could translate some of these for an English person? I have no idea what Chex, wavy lays, ruffles, lucky charms or captain crunch are! This is a really tough one from this side of the pond! 5y
BookwormAHN @RachelO Chex, Lucky Charms and Captain Crunch are breakfast cereals. Wavy Lays and Ruffles are crisps. I hope that helps. 5y
rockpools @BookwormAHN Thank you 😊. 5y
LibrarianRyan Let's see. Captain Crunch and Lucky Charms are popular Children's cereal. Chex is a “healthier“ cereal like Cheerios but they look like square cages. They are popular for snack mix as they come in multiple types. Plus lots of Chex are glutton free. Wavy lays and Ruffles are both crinkle cut potato chips. Normal Lays are super thin so they different the tick ones that are similar to Ruffles as Wavy lays. 5y

Pickpick

After a few months, I've finally finished Either/Or. What an interesting novel. I love the exploration of ethics and aesthetics, and to do it in a novel meant that Kierkegaard was able to explore all his ideas without settling on one choice. #translatedfiction #philosophy
