Voices From the Street
Voices From the Street | Philip K. Dick
5 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
Stuart Hadley is a young radio electronics salesman in early 1950s Oakland, California. He has what many would consider the ideal life; a nice house, a pretty wife, a decent job with prospects for advancement, but he still feels unfulfilled; something is missing from his life. Hadley is an angry young manan artist, a dreamer, a screw-up. He tries to fill his void first with drinking, and sex, and then with religious fanaticism, but nothing seems to be working, and it is driving him crazy. He reacts to the love of his wife and the kindness of his employer with anxiety and fear. One of the earliest books that Dick ever wrote, and the only novel that has never been published, Voices from the Street is the story of Hadley's descent into depression and madness, and out the other side. Most known in his lifetime as a science fiction writer, Philip K. Dick is growing in reputation as an American writer whose powerful vision is an ironic reflection of the present. This novel completes the publication of his canon. At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied.

Pruzy Yes! The variety of PKD books that are available on Book Depository is amazing! Way better selection than what is available in NA! 6y
Cinfhen Yay!! Two weeks is pretty good turn around 👍🏻enjoy 😁 6y
BookwormAHN Yay, enjoy 👏🏻 6y
dystopianaut @greeniezona they were all written in the 50s/60s and were published posthumously! i‘m on a mission to read all of PKD‘s novels (currently sitting at 33/44) so i‘ve been looking for these guys for awhile! can‘t wait to read them. 😍 have you read most of his work? 6y
dystopianaut @Chrissyreadit thank you!!! can‘t wait! 😍 6y

dystopianaut @Pruzy i had no idea! i‘ve been looking for these for awhile and couldn‘t believe it when i found them! and oh boy, the selection of different covers/editions they have of his other works...... i think i‘m in trouble. 😳😂 6y
dystopianaut @Cinfhen i couldn‘t believe they got here so fast! will definitely be buying from them again. thank you!! 💜 6y
dystopianaut @greeniezona he‘s a real gem. i can‘t get enough! which is your favorite that you‘ve read? 6y
greeniezona I found a list over on listchallenges.com (I love that site), and it appears I‘ve read 12 of his books so far, a few of them more than once, and of course, a bunch of his short stories. If pressed to choose just one favorite, it would probably be A Scanner Darkly, but I love Valis and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep as well. How about you? 6y
dystopianaut @greeniezona ooooh fun, i‘ll have to check out that site! 🙂 those are all great picks! valis is fascinating, and i think by reading it you‘re able to get a lot more out of his other works... it adds another layer to everything. it‘s so hard to pick a favorite, but i think i‘d have to go with ubik. i also really love martian time-slip, maze of death, & flow my tears! 🖤 6y

The last time we hear from Marsha is when she is left in a motel room, raped and beaten by the main character. After that, he loses his mind, his job and his left eye. But then... the ending just details his physical and emotional healing, the loving dedication of his wife, the improvement of his home and career path. No guilt or follow up or addressing what he did to that woman. Not a word. Simply moved on. I see how you thought of women, Dick...

mrsh62010 He also stole Marsha's car, drove home and took his baby child from his crib, leaving him unfed and abandoned inside the cold car for a few days while he spent $100 (in 1950s US dollars) on booze and bus tickets, his wife worried sick. But he did make sure to let his wife know he doesn't blame her for all the things that "happened." ...As if any of it could possibly be even remotely her fault. So I guess he's all redeemed in the end... 7y

This book is growing on me. I'm in part 2. I'm working (emotionally) on separating the characters from the author. Some of these people are just really unsavory but I wanna see where it goes. The writing is fantastic of course.
