Countee Cullen: Collected Poems
Countee Cullen: Collected Poems: (American Poets Project #32) | Countee Cullen
6 posts | 1 read | 4 to read
A major and sometimes controversial figure of the Harlem Renaissance, Countee Cullen fused a mastery of the formal lyric with a passionate engagement with themes social, religious, racial, and personal in such books as Color, Copper Sun, and The Black Christ. Certain of his poemsHeritage, Yet Do I Marvelare widely celebrated, but much of Cullens work remains to be discovered. This volume restores to print a body of work of singular intensity and beauty. This is volume #32 in The Library of Americas American Poets Project series.

Such a powerful poem to be so short. I need to read more by him.

Bailedbailed

What can I say? I am constitutionally incapable of taking rhymed poetry seriously. And most of these were particularly, offputtingly pretentious. Bailed at the 18% mark. Would like to read a biography of Countee Cullen someday, though.

I treasure every instruction that encourages existence. Life is a challenge, but do not fear living. This urging is from the Harlem Renaissance poet, Countee Cullen whose time on this planet was brief.
Enjoy National Poetry Month in April. Get to know a poet. Celebrate their work.
