Satanic Panic
Satanic Panic: Pop-cultural Paranoia in the 1980s | Kier-La Janisse, Paul Corupe
14 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 18 to read
In the 1980s, it seemed impossible to escape Satan's supposed influence. This percolating cultural hysteria is now known as the Satanic Panic, a period in which a fascinating cultural legacy of Satan-battling media. This book is an in-depth exploration of how a controversial culture war played out during the decade and how widespread fear of a Satanic conspiracy was illuminated and propagated through almost every culture pathway, from heavy metal to Dungeons & Dragons role playing games, Christian comics, direct-to-CHS scare films and even home computers.

Finishing off with mention of the West Memphis Three brings to earth all of the craziness that comes before. It‘s easy to look on the 80‘s/90‘s Satanic Panic as ridiculous/laughable with hindsight. Ultimately, people suffered, though. Those who were the ‘other‘ were persecuted needlessly. I suppose the only difference between then and now is who the ‘other‘ is.

The only way this protest could be more British is if they all sat down for a cup of tea and a biscuit during it 😂 ☕️ 🍪

So....He-Man was seen as a negative influence on children by the Christian Right?

Now there‘s a sentence I never thought I‘d write.

IamIamIam Ummmm.... 😂😂😂 3y
The_Penniless_Author My friend's dad let members of their church come into their house to seize his Masters of the Universe toys and burn them in a "cleansing ritual". I remember all this stuff very well. 3y
Connster @The_Penniless_Author Wow. Just wow. That‘s absolutely ridiculous! 3y

...and continued the day with new pyjamas, a mug of Costa Gingerbread Latte and a little chill time before crafting this evening ☕️👚🩳📕📘📗📙

BookishMarginalia Love gingerbread latte! I‘m so sad Starbucks no longer carries it. 3y
Connster @BookishMarginalia Me too! This one wasn‘t as flavoursome as Starbucks‘ but it was still good! 3y

When I received this, my first thoughts were:

1. Wow, this is a heavy book for the size of it!
2. This book feels so nice (matte suedey-type cover with shiny bits)
3. This is going to be awesome.

I‘d just watched a true crime video about the West Memphis Three, so Satanic Panic was on my radar. Made a good start on it this morning, but now I have to actually do things, so shelving it until this evening. 😈 🐐 🩸 🗡

Sam, a pizza delivery driver, finds herself fighting for her life after making a delivery to an unusually nicer neighborhood. Obviously these rich people made their money by being in league with the devil. While watching the trailer for this I had the thought that this sounded like a Grady Hendrix book, or at least one of the entries in Paperbacks from Hell. So, I wasn't too surprised when I saw he wrote the screenplay. Releases same day as IT 2.

Great collection of essays about the causes and consequences of Satanic Panic. Filled with photos that bring the essays to life.

LauraJ @valeriegeary Not sure if living through this made me appreciate this book more or not. Book club will be discussing this week and members are in their 20‘s through 80‘s. Looking forward to hearing others‘ take on it. 5y

There‘s a chapter on Canadian satanic panic in this book. It‘s a very short, lackluster essay. Surely the 80‘s were more exciting in Canada than this!
