No matter how many times you have said goodbye to yourself in the presence of others you will assume something of the same resolute gaiety. It is a form of armour. (313)

More often than not people who see me on trains and in ships, or in restaurants, feel a kind of resentment of me since I taught myself to enjoy being alone. …if I must be alone, I refuse to be alone as if it were something weak and distasteful, like convalescence. (238)
longish quote from p226, beginning of ‘Sea Change 1937-1939‘
We sat whispering and laughing and piling the pungent little black seeds on dry toasted bread, and every swallow of the (smooth potent gin) was as hot and soft as the candle flames around us.

Had too many good books to choose from so asked my (not-bookish) sibling to pick a book to read! He picked this based on its cover. After 3 months of hospital food, it‘s reminding me how much fun it is to cook and prepare meals — for oneself and loved ones; if you eat food you enjoy the taste and texture of, you don‘t tend to crave ‘junk‘.
What is ‘junk‘ to one is not necessarily to another; slow food/eating & prep is a privilege 😘
Ok I‘ll play, decided to do this off of books read in last year to slightly narrow the field:
1. David Mitchell
2. PD James
3. Martha Wells
4. Virginia Woolf
5. MFK Fisher
Wonder how this will change in 2019? Fun to think about!
@MinDea Will you be hosting the #feedareader swap and whatever in 2019? If so, I'm interested in participating. Thank you for all of the work you do coordinating these fun events.

New read and early dinner! My first time making couscous! I didn‘t realize it was so easy. Can‘t wait to finally sink my teeth into M.F.K. Fisher‘s book of essays—inspired by the book THE READING CURE.
According to the Half Price sale sticker I removed, I purchased this in 2012, but it had been in the store (and marked up) since 1991!

#booksthatmakemehungry anything by M.F.K. Fisher. Most of her works shown here. "There is a communion of more than our bodies when bread is broken and wine drunk. And that is my answer, when people ask me: Why do you write about hunger, and not wars or love?"
Reading this book for the #bookriotreadharderchallenge food memoir category. It's very dated, but lovely. It's a well-read library copy, obviously😊
I wanted to like this book. It's garnered so much acclaim in food circles. And some of it was fascinating. But I tired of the food descriptions & wanted more of the history she experienced primarily in Europe in the 30's. That would have been a better approach from my perspective.
