#OnThisDay in 1951, James Jones' From Here to Eternity was first published by Scribner's. The book did not appear as written; the publishers removed mentions of gay sex and four letter words. Jones fought against the changes, stating "the things we change in this book...will in five years, or ten years, come in someone else‘s book anyway." In 2011, Jones' estate was able to issue a digital edition including the cut material. #HistoryGetsLIT

This was the bestselling book in the US in 1951 and friends it is looong. The prose is quite good, and Jones has some interesting points about social "mechanization" and resisting conformity. But his characters are unpleasant human beings, and the relentless bigotry and cynicism makes the 950 pages of small type feel twice as long as they should.

I've been thinking about this since last night and it's harder than I thought.

Since it seems sometimes like just about every book ever has been movie-fied nowadays, I just picked a few I think turned out particularly well and sandwiched them into my piles of DVDs for today's #septphotochallenge #somethingforsept 🎬
