From Here to Eternity
From Here to Eternity: The Restored Edition | James Jones
James Joness epic story of army life in the calm before Pearl Harbornow with previously censored scenes and dialogue restored At the Pearl Harbor army base in 1941, Robert E. Lee Prewitt is Uncle Sams finest bugler. A career soldier with no patience for army politics, Prewitt becomes incensed when a commanders favorite wins the title of First Bugler. His indignation results in a transfer to an infantry unit whose commander is less interested in preparing for war than he is in boxing. But when Prewitt refuses to join the company team, the commander and his sergeant decide to make the buglers life hell. An American classic now available with scenes and dialogue considered unfit for publication in the 1950s, From Here to Eternity is a stirring picture of army life in the months leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. This ebook features an illustrated biography of James Jones including rare photos from the authors estate.

#OnThisDay in 1951, James Jones' From Here to Eternity was first published by Scribner's. The book did not appear as written; the publishers removed mentions of gay sex and four letter words. Jones fought against the changes, stating "the things we change in this book...will in five years, or ten years, come in someone else‘s book anyway." In 2011, Jones' estate was able to issue a digital edition including the cut material. #HistoryGetsLIT

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it. Some will be old, some will be new - don't judge me, I have a lot of books.

Day 26th

Join the fun if you want!

Eternity achieved!

This was the bestselling book in the US in 1951 and friends it is looong. The prose is quite good, and Jones has some interesting points about social "mechanization" and resisting conformity. But his characters are unpleasant human beings, and the relentless bigotry and cynicism makes the 950 pages of small type feel twice as long as they should.

1. From Here to Eternity by James Jones ; The Wouldbegoods by E. Nesbit ; Behind Time by Lynn Abbey
2. Winter of the Witch by Katherine Arden
3. Episode 1 of the new Dracula series on Netflix. Too early to decide yet what I think about the series, but I didn't shut it off in disgust, so that's promising.

Fun fact: it's not just a title, it's also the arithmetical problem you must solve every time you wonder how many pages are left.

Nute If I‘m understanding this in its suggested meaning, I‘m laughing so much right now!😂 5y
swynn I mean it's long. Reeeeally long. 😁 5y

I've been thinking about this since last night and it's harder than I thought.

1️⃣ No idea. Love triangles drive me bananas. I just want to scream "Make up your mind already! Or create a triad! Just do something!" So, I don't know.
2️⃣ Good question? Han and Leia, maybe?
3️⃣ From Here to Eternity (1953) the one on the beach. Hawt!

Since it seems sometimes like just about every book ever has been movie-fied nowadays, I just picked a few I think turned out particularly well and sandwiched them into my piles of DVDs for today's #septphotochallenge #somethingforsept 🎬

Alisnazzy Howl. Always and forever. (Basically every Studio Ghibli film though lol) 8y
Alisnazzy Also, Paprika. That film is still effing with my head. 8y
KafkaKitten @Ambrosnazzy Yes! Studio Ghibli is a gift to the world 😍 And Paprika is one of the biggest mindfucks ever and I love it for that. 8y
LeahBergen Oh, Harold and Maude! 8y
KafkaKitten @LeahBergen Hands down, my favorite movie of all time! I'm always so happy when other people know it 😊 8y
