'Simon Lelic writes beautifully and he has a real talent for chilling stories that play mercilessly on our most disturbing fears' Cara Hunter THE NEXT SPINE-TINGLING THRILLER FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE HOUSE Susanna Fenton has a secret. Not sure how I really feel about this book..just the story never captured me, none of the characters were likable, the writing was off sometimes. Thankfully this was a freebie out of a lending library. I‘d say pass on this one unless you‘re desperate for something to read 😂

I‘ve been trying to come up with something to say about this book, but the truth is it‘s just severely average. The writing is pretty good at times, but other times it‘s cringey and hard to get through. There are no likable characters in the book, and maybe that‘s the point, but it was hard to connect with anyone who was introduced. The book itself is fine, but I wouldn‘t recommend the read to anyone unless they had no other options.

Eventually Susanna would tell Emily everything....Just not yet, obviously. When she was…how old? 6? 9? 12?
Not yet.
It became a refrain. A get-out clause. She was being honest because the lie was only temporary. Not even a lie. An omission. Like her omission with Ruth, which...was tied to the lie she‘d allowed herself. That one, final lie that she & Emily so desperately needed. And besides, she would tell Emily one day.
Some day.
Just not yet.

This is a well written psychological thriller, but I had a few issues with it. The main one being the fact I hate reading about animal abuse & it felt gratuitous here - I‘m just glad I worked out what was coming so I could skip the worst of it. Rating: 3⭐️

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Penguin Books (UK), for the opportunity to review an ARC.

Pickpick

Another first time author for me! One room, two people - it does sound like it could be a bit boring, but it really wasn‘t! I devoured this one! The use of flashbacks stopped it from feeling claustrophobic and explained the background really well. The takeaway moral from this, is that secrets are unhealthy, basically!

A suspenseful psychological thriller, a well written and well structured story. A great build up of tension with quite a few ‘edge of your seat‘ moments. There was a certain incident after which I nearly stopped reading but decided to persevere. I‘m glad I continued because, although I wasn‘t as wowed as some readers and found it somewhat predictable, I did think it was quite a page turner even though the characters aren‘t particularly likeable.
