Investigating the murder of the Russian Imperial Family, Helen Rappaport embarks on a quest to uncover the many international plots to save them, why they failed, and who was responsible. The murder of the Romanov family in July 1918 horrified the world and its aftershocks still reverberate today. In Putin's autocratic Russia, the Revolution itself is considered a crime and its anniversary was largely ignored. In stark contrast, the centenary of the massacre of the Imperial Family will be a huge ceremony to be attended by the Patriarch of the Russian Orthodox Church. While the murder itself has received major attention, what has never been investigated in detail are the various plots behind the scenes to save the familyon the part of their royal relatives, other governments, and Russian monarchists loyal to the Tsar. Rappaport refutes the claim that the fault lies entirely with King George V, as has been the traditional claim for the last century. The responsibility for failing the Romanovs must be equally shared. The question of asylum for the Tsar and his family was an extremely complicated issue that presented enormous political, logistical and geographical challenges at a time when Europe was still at war. Well, it wasn't a race ... the author captures the political atmosphere of that time very well, on the basis of some newly available/discovered documents she also summarizes the (in)activity of diplomacy, governments, monarchs and dispels some myths related to this family. A very detailed survey ends with the question - if the family would even want to leave the Russia?! I recommend it to anyone who is interested in this period ...👇

Simona @Cinfhen Not academic at all, some smaller parts are more on the dryer side, that‘s true, but it is still very readable. My concern is - if you aren‘t familiar with European history, the names could be troublesome. 3y

I love nonfiction about the romanovs. This one was about possible plans and plots to save the family. Obviously none worked.

Learned my lesson from the other day, when my cousin begged me to come over and hang out because I was the “best babysitter ever” and promptly ignored me for her friend on FaceTime and I was stranded without my book. I‘m already engrossed and I‘m only about 20 pages in. I‘ll never be anything but fascinated and horrified by such a tragic story. Were they perfect leaders? Not by a long shot. The imprisonment and assassination of the Romanovs are such an intriguing time in Russia‘s history. This book focused on the attempts and obstacles in saving the family before their execution during the Russian revolution. The politics and monarchy of Europe at the time of WWI was quite interesting. The family‘s hesitancy to leave immediately reminds me so much of how we wonder why the Jews didn‘t leave Europe.... no one wanted them.
