“There‘s a more positive feeling about the musical than there is about Wedekind‘s play. He‘s such a misanthrope. He just hates everybody. Sure, he‘s a genius and his characters are complexly drawn, but everybody‘s such a bastard! Except for Wendla. And Frau Gabor. And maybe Moritz. Those are the only decent people in the entire play, and everybody else is kind of a shitbag on some level.”
