Murder in the Telephone Exchange
Murder in the Telephone Exchange | June Wright
6 posts | 4 read | 11 to read
First published in 1948, when it was the best-selling mystery of the year in the authors native Australia, Murder in the Telephone Exchange stars feisty young operator Maggie Byrnes. When one of her more unpopular colleagues is murdered her head bashed in with a buttinski, a piece of equipment used to listen in on phone calls Maggie resolves to turn sleuth. Some of her coworkers are acting strangely, and Maggie is convinced she has a better chance of figuring out who is responsible for the killing than the rather stolid police team assigned to the case, who seem to think she herself might have had something to do with it. But then one of her friends is murdered too, and it looks like Maggie might be next. Narrated with verve and wit, this is a whodunit in the tradition of Dorothy L. Sayers and Daphne du Maurier, by turns entertaining and suspenseful, and building to a gripping climax.

I‘m kicking off my #WinterReadathon with a classic #ozfiction novel I‘ve had on my shelf for a few years. I‘m pretty sure it was in a Litsy swap, possibly from @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Written in 1948, it‘s set in Melbourne & sounds very much in the vein of Dorothy.L.Sayers & Dame Agatha.

My goals for the ‘thon are:

📚Read 10 books(at least!)
⏱️Read for 100hrs(hopefully)
❄️Try to drum up some Xmas spirit🎄(Bah humbug!)

Andrew65 Great to have you with us, it‘s doesn‘t feel a complete Readathon without you. Good luck. Ho, Ho, Ho. 🎄🎅🎄🎅🎄 1y
DieAReader I love your goals, especially the❄️one. Trying that here too. Hopefully we can both find at least a little bit🎄🤓📚 1y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘ve read and loved it - so there is a good chance it was from me 😂 I‘m still a bit fascinated with telephone exchanges after reading it. It was the best selling mystery in Australia in 1948 - outselling Agatha Christie, which is pretty impressive. 1y

Finished this on the bus this morning, after falling asleep with like ten minutes left. 😅 Not as good as the nun mystery (also by Wright) but will certainly read the sequel.

I enjoyed this book.. published in 1948..an old fashioned murder mystery set in a Melbourne telephone exchange. Its a romp with a strong female protagonist , who always seems to be a step ahead of the police..and the killer..good fun!!

Morning coffee on the verandah...a bit of reading..a bit of sewing.. and now off to do a bit of gardening. My perfect day off work..these are the things that keep me calm at work in our busy ICU. I‘m enjoying Murder in the Telephone Exchange. I‘m also loving the series The Durrells on TV. Has anyone read The Corfu Trilogy that it is based on? Happy reading and hobbies my friends 😘😘

#MusicalNewYear #TelephoneWire

I drew a complete blank on this prompt yesterday, but this book popped into my head just now. First published in 1948, forgotten for years and republished in 2014, it is a cracking mystery and a fascinating portrait of post war Melbourne. Yet another one of my books I can't find. I desperately need more shelving!

Cinfhen Yay for memory 🤓 5y
Freespirit I like the sound of this one 👍🏼 5y

I really, really enjoyed this murder mystery, which was written in the late 1940s and set in a telephone exchange in Australia. If you like Miss Fisher and/or classic crime from authors like Dorothy L Sayers and Agatha Christie, you should definitely try this.
