The Agony House
The Agony House | Cherie Priest
17 posts | 15 read | 21 to read
Denise Farber has just moved back to New Orleans with her mom and step-dad. They left years ago after Hurricane Katrina and are back now, wagering the last of their family's money on fixing up an old, run-down house and converting it to a bed and breakfast. When the unexplained noises start, that seems a little weird. Same too for the fact that nothing seems to work around the house...even when it should. But when floors start collapsing suddenly and deadly objects fall everywhere--and voices start speaking to Denise--she knows that something more sinister lies hidden. Could the answers lie in an old comic book that Denise finds in the abandoned attic...the lost last work of a famous artist who apparently lived here? Denise isn't going anywhere, so she must unravel the mystery, on the pages and off them, if she and her family are to survive...

*sigh* Another one bites the dust. Again- not the fault of the book- my Covid state of mind seems to be to blame. Decided I am going to scrap my Halloween TBR and just jump to warm and fuzzy Christmas books.

tracey38 I've recently gotten quite a few Christmas books from the used book store and will be diving into them soon. ❤ 4y

Ok. Think I found a book I can stick with. Anyone who understands the therapeutic powers of ice cream and hot fudge is speaking my language.

2. All About Passion by Stephanie Laurens
3. All the kids are home together for a change since Spring Break is extended 🤗 (we'll revisit how I feel about this soon after another week of having to feed all of them + a tag-a-long)

This was a good, if somewhat predictable, ghost story. The audiobook was good and I liked the way it differentiated the text from the graphic novel sections. I had some nitpicky critiques of the author. Some characters developed southern accents at the end of the book that they didn't have at the beginning and at times the narrator sounded more like she was reading to kindergarteners. Still an enjoyable listen though.

Spending my morning with Happy Color, coffee and my audiobook. It's going to be hard to go to work.

This was a fun read with some solid positive messages. The story combines a family‘s struggle to return to a life in New Orleans with the story of the author of an unpublished comic from the 1950s. There‘s also a great ghost story. It‘s told in chapters interspersed with a few pages of comic panels. I thoroughly enjoyed how all the pieces were woven together.

Daisey @Sace I finished it up this evening and really enjoyed it. Thought you might like to see an example of the art as well. 4y

After bailing on The Language of Food I'm giving this #inspiredbylitsy title a try. I've listened to the author's Borden Chronicles series and loved it. Thanks for bringing this book to my attention @Daisey !

Daisey Hope you enjoy; I haven‘t had much chance to read any more this week. I‘m curious about the audio but specifically got a print copy for the comics pages. Curious to hear what you think. 4y
Sace @Daisey I do hate that I'll miss the comics pages. I wonder how they will be in an audiobook as well. I'm loving the story so far. 4y
Sace @Daisey I just got to the comic section and it's really cool! There's a full cast and it's like listening to an old radio program. I hate that I'm missing the art, but the audiobook is doing a great job of distinguishing the two stories. 4y

What a great book! I loved the spook and creepiness factor of the story. I also loved how the story was intertwined with a backstory in the form of a comic. Great characters and a very unique and great story!

Cherie Priest is great at creepy! Denise finds a comic hidden in the attic of the house her folks are fixing up in NOLA. Pages from the comic are interspersed w/the prose. Bad things start to happen when Denise reads the comic. I love the attention to detail on the book cover and jacket. Tara O'Connor is one of my favorite comic writers/illustrators and I love Cherie Priest. Double win for me!

A simple, yet solid, YA novel about a haunted house. I liked Denise, who is open minded enough to believe in ghosts, but also very practical because of her life circumstances. Graphic elements were a fun addition, and a nice twist at the end.

And done. Interesting premise and setting, and amazing illustrations but the book lost tension as it moved to the last third. There wasn‘t enough risk to really keep my interest and her growing friendships weren‘t given the kind of impact that is realistic for a girl in her situation.

Let‘s see what the kid thinks!

My daughter asked me to pre-read to see if it‘s any good. 😂

May be the first book of our mother-daughter book club. 😊

I didn't realize this was a hybrid novel/comic and with it being horror I am so in.
