Little Women Abroad
Little Women Abroad: The Alcott Sisters' Letters from Europe, 1870-1871 | Louisa May Alcott
7 posts | 5 read | 1 to read
In 1870, Louisa May Alcott and her younger sister Abby May Alcott began a fourteen-month tour of Europe. Louisa had already made her mark as a writer; May was on the verge of a respected art career. Little Women Abroad gathers a generous selection of Mays drawings along with all of the known letters written by the two Alcott sisters during their trip. More than thirty drawings are included, nearly all of them previously unpublished. Of the seventy-one letters collected here, more than three-quarters appear in their entirety for the first time. Daniel Shealys supporting materials add detail and context to the people, places, and events referenced in the letters and illustrations.By the time of the Alcott sisters sojourn, Louisas Little Women was already an international success, and her most recent work, An Old-Fashioned Girl, was selling briskly. Louisa was now a grand literary lioness on tour. She would compose Little Men while in Europe, and her European letters would form the basis of her travel book Shawl Straps. If Louisas letters reveal a writers eye, then Mays demonstrate an eye for color, detail, and composition. Although May had prior art training in Boston, she came into her own only during her studies with European masters. When at a loss for words, she took her drawing pen in hand. These letters of two important American artists, one literary, the other visual, tell a vibrant story at the crossroads of European and American history and culture.

I absolutely loved this book. Was it a bit wordy at times? Totally, but it didn‘t make me love it any less. I so didn‘t care for Amy but she grew on me. And I‘m so glad Jo got her happy ending. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 five of them from me on this one.

I‘ve played piano since I was 5, I can‘t put into words the joy it brings me to go to my parents house and be able to play my baby grand. It truly is my oldest friend.

I think I would have loved this book if I had read it when I was young. I had a hard time getting through it, almost a year, and initially thought it was because I know the story so well. I love the 4 movie versions I‘ve seen. I like the sisterhood notion in it, but I found the rest puritanical. Every chapter is a lesson to give more and more of oneself to be better ”. https://lithub.com/louisa-may-alcotts-letter-of-advice-to-a-young-writer/

Palimpsest I had formed my opinion long before reading the lit-hub article but it made me feel better that even the author wasn‘t wholeheartedly into it. It‘s nice to be kind to others and as a Bildungsroman grow into good women, but the self-sacrificing was too much, such as Meg having to apologize to John first when they fought. Still going to see the new film this month. 4y

Finally watched the episode 1 of the new Little Women that I recorded a while back. I am HOOKED ( despite already have read the book and a die hard fan of the Winona Ryder movie)- however I can only watch episode 2 and 3 by either a) the 7 day trial of PBS Masterpiece OR b) pay $2.99 for each episode. 🤔Can I stop my “masterpiece trial “ before the 7 days are up and not become a member aka not pay for something I will not ever use ?

TEArificbooks Idk how it works with pbs, but I tried the 7 day free trial with cinamax to watch something and canceled right away so I wouldn't be charged after that, but they charged me for a month of cinamax anyway. I think the 7 days free is only of you buy a month after. 6y
Emily92Bibliophile @mdm139 ok thank you! I‘ll probably just buy the season from amazon- I think it‘s $9 😳thanks ! 6y
