Nahid has six months left to live. Or so the doctors say. At fifty, she is no stranger to loss. But now, as she stands on the precipice of her own deathjust as she has learned that her daughter Aram is pregnant with her first childNahid is filled with both new fury and long dormant rage. Her life back home in Iran, and living as a refugee in Sweden, has been about survival at any cost. How to actually live, she doesnt know; she has never had the ability or opportunity to learn. In the form of a furious exhale, an almost primal scream, this extraordinary novel asks us to consider: what do we pass on to our children? What do we owe those we love? And without roots, can you ever truly be free? Soon to be published in twenty-five countries, What We Owe introduces a fierce, and necessary, new voice in international fiction, exploring how trauma and loss metabolize over time, and how they infect the generations that follow.

When I started this book,I immediately wanted to bail.Nahid, the narrator has just been diagnosed with cancer. She came across to me as a despicable person-angry,nasty, to her daughter & those around her.But something pulled me back into her story & I am so thankful I responded to that pull.As her life story slowly emerged,as she struggled to understand her journey herself & cope with her diagnosis,I began to feel empathy.A refugee of the Iranian🔽

kspenmoll 🔼 Revolution, she threw herself into her role with idealism & little understanding. She was marked as traitor to the Iranian regime for life.So she& her husband immigrated to Sweden. The trauma of herself as a refugee,& her compounded losses:family, culture, roots, country, never left her.She cannot get over all these losses- she states starkly:”You are condemned and your children are too. Everything remains, and everything is passed down.”🔽 (edited) 7mo
kspenmoll 🔼 Her statement reminds me of The Postcard & the idea that the Holocaust & its resulting trauma stays in survivors‘ body cells for generations. (edited) 7mo

Completely (!) not what I expected!
Toughgt I was picking up some easy breazy entertaining read with a soft spin of love story and youth in revolt in Iran, but was I wrong! It's tide, it's dark, it's sad and it's hopefull.
Beautiful.

Nahid, was once a #flowerinthedesert but now 50 and living in Sweden, has been given 6 months to live. Told from her point of view we see her anger, resistance and denial. Her reaction to her daughters pregnancy. We flash back to her difficult childhood in Iran and her naivete as a college age revolutionary that leads to tragedy, betrayal, and eventual flight to Sweden. 5⭐

I couldn‘t put this slim novel down. Nahid is a woman in her 50‘s, living in Sweden after immigrating from Iran in the 1980‘s. Now facing death, she reflects on her life, relationships, and motherhood without sentimentality. What do we owe those who come before us, and those we leave behind?

It packs a punch, but it‘s not without hope.

When Nahid receives a diagnosis of terminal cancer, she has to confront the most difficult elements of her past -- her time as a revolutionary in her home country of her Iran and the loss of many she loved, her experience and identity as as refugee, and her role as both a daughter and a mother. Short but powerful read.

“Is it possible you use up life faster if you live intensely? People have always told me I laugh too loud. Imagine if every laugh, every laugh that was too loud, took days off my life. What if you‘re only given a limited number of breaths, and they run out more quickly when you laugh too loud, talk too loud, dance yourself breathless.”

As she is dying of cancer,50 year old Nahid recalls her past, and a major turning point during the Iranian Revolution, when her 14 yr old sister joined her at a protest and was killed. This book is beautifully written, spare and harsh and alive and painful. It is about mother‘s and daughters and what binds us, what we give and what we leave behind. It is about being a refugee in a land of snow, not sand.It is about life, death, dying, and new birth.

#carknitting #carreading #BFClydesCiderMill #MysticCT

Traveling to BF Clyde‘s Cider Mill for cider, apple cider donuts, hard cider tasting, Apple wine tasting. When cleaning out a storage room, I found this old knitting- with my knitting journal from 2015! Picking it up again to finish- car blanket. Have not knit in many years since I took a class on making a sweater using circular needles& utterly failed- sweater became a lopsided bucket.
