Married to a Bedouin
Married to a Bedouin | Marguerite van Geldermalsen
4 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
'"Where you staying?" the Bedouin asked. "Why you not stay with me tonight - in my cave?"' Thus begins Marguerite van Geldermalsen's story of how a New Zealand-born nurse came to be married to Mohammad Abdallah Othman, a Bedouin souvenir-seller from the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. It was 1978 and she and a friend were travelling through the Middle East when Marguerite met the charismatic Mohammad who convinced her that he was the man for her. A life with Mohammad meant moving into his ancient cave and learning to love the regular tasks of baking shrak bread on an open fire and collecting water from the spring. And as Marguerite feels herself becoming part of the Bedouin community, she is thankful for the twist in fate that has led her to this contented life. Marguerite's light-hearted and guileless observations of the people she comes to love are as heart-warming as they are valuable, charting Bedouin traditions now lost to the modern world.

A definite Pick! Inscribed by Marguerite, I bought this in Petra in October from her son and finally found the time to read it. A really special book, she writes positively and with affection for the Bedouin people and their way of life, which became hers because of her love for Mohammed and his for her. She is honest and self deprecating and relays stories with humour and intelligence. Lovely read.

i.z.booknook I really want to borrow this one from you! 🥰 5y

#nofemmeber #burningbride

Here‘s a book I read a few years ago that fits. Becoming a #bride in a place that‘s #burning hot! Marguerite is a NZ woman who married a Bedouin man and lived in a cave raising a family. It‘s a fascinating book about learning to fit into a new culture/community, managing life away from modern conveniences, with some adventures before chronicling how their community was forced away from their traditional caves.

Cinfhen This sounds super fascinating... 6y
Centique @Cinfhen it was - and a very easy read. I‘ll keep my eye out for a copy of it. I doubt you can find it outside of NZ or Aus! 😘 6y
Cinfhen Ha!!! I was thinking finding this book might not be that easy 😘 6y
