The King of Bones and Ashes
The King of Bones and Ashes | J. D. Horn
13 posts | 13 read | 35 to read
From the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of the Witching Savannah series comes the story of a young witch's quest to uncover her family's terrifying history... Magic is seeping out of the world, leaving the witches who've relied on it for countless centuries increasingly hopeless. While some see an inevitable end of their era, others are courting madness--willing to sacrifice former allies, friends, and family to retain the power they covet. While the other witches watch their reality unravel, young Alice Marin is using magic's waning days to delve into the mystery of numerous disappearances in the occult circles of New Orleans. Alice disappeared once, too--caged in an asylum by blood relatives. Recently freed, she fears her family may be more involved with the growing crisis than she ever dared imagine. Yet the more she seeks the truth about her family's troubled history, the more she realizes her already-fragile psyche may be at risk. Discovering the cause of the vanishings, though, could be the only way to escape her mother's reach while determining the future of all witches.

This is a good book once you get past the beginning where it was slow to start but once it did it was a page turner. Set in New Orleans post Katrina we have evil and magical cats and a mix of characters that are interesting and engaging.

erinreads You had me at evil and magical cats! 😹 3y
Read-y_Picker I have the whole series but keep pushing it off... Tried listening to the audio of this one and found it hard to follow. I think reading it will be more effective.

@erinreads if that's the magic combo for you I recommend my current read
3y
KristiAhlers @Read-y_Picker yeah I put it off too. Once you get past the first 25 pages the author hits his stride. And I‘m totally checking out that other book! Thanks for the recommendation! 3y

I really wanted to enjoy this book more than I did. It was very slow moving initially and there were so many characters introduced that I found I couldn't make a connection with any of them. The storyline is intriguing and there's a possibility that I might continue to the next book, but it's not going to be any time soon. ⭐⭐⭐

xxjenadanxx I was the same way. I had high expectations for this one after finishing his Wishing Savannah series but couldn't get into this one. 5y

This first book in a new series has a #boogieman character, called Babau Jean. From the Cast of Characters listing by the author, “Also known as “John the Bogey,” Babau Jean is New Orleans‘s own born and bred bogeyman. Go on. Turn out the lights. Face the mirror. Call his name three times. He‘ll see you.” I dare you!

DivineDiana I‘m intrigued! 😮 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @DivineDiana I liked Horn‘s Savannah Witches series better than this one. But it‘s still good fun without being overly heavy. Here‘s my book review FYI http://thebibliophage.com/book-review-king-bones-ashes-jd-horn/ 6y
DivineDiana Thank you! Trust your opinion! ❤️ 6y

Cinfhen Great blurb!!! I‘m almost sold!!! I just don‘t really enjoy fantasy too much... but this one has me wondering 6y
Wife Great pic!🖤 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Yeah, this might still be too much fantasy for you. Babau Jean is a part of it, but it‘s really about witches battling each other for power in the witchiest city in America. Check my review ... and definitely make it a borrow. 😎😍 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Wife Thank you. Credit goes to the Unsplash archive for that one! 6y
Cinfhen Thanks!! I‘ll see if this title is available on #OverDrive 😁 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Cinfhen Might be. The second book has a good list of characters, which I wish had been in the first. Let me know if you start it, and I‘ll send you the list. 6y
Robothugs 😱😱 I refuse to call anyone‘s name three times. Including Beetlejuice. 6y
MinDea This sounds good! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @Robothugs Better safe than sorry! 6y
BarbaraTheBibliophage @MinDea It is good. Not great. But solid urban, witchy fantasy. 6y

The Marin family lives in post-Katrina New Orleans. And they‘re also witches. Somehow, all the witches in New Orleans are losing their power. It‘s up to the next gen—Lucy, Alice, and Lisette—to figure out what to do next. I found this first in a series to be overly heavy on the world building, but also intriguing enough to continue. Next book‘s on my ARC shelf. 3 stars.
