Fire from Heaven
Fire from Heaven | Mary Renault
Mary Renault is a shining light to both historical novelists and their readers. She does not pretend the past is like the present, or that the people of ancient Greece were just like us. She shows us their strangeness; discerning, sure-footed, challenging our values, piquing our curiosity, she leads us through an alien landscape that moves and delights us.Hilary Mantel Alexander the Great stands alone as a leader and strategist, and Fire from Heaven is Mary Renaults unsurpassed dramatization of the formative years of his life. His parents fight for their precocious sons love: On one side, his volatile father, Philip, and on the other, his overbearing mother, Olympias. The story tells of the conquerors two great bondsto his horse, Oxhead, and to his dearest friend and eventual lover, Hephaistionand of the army he commands when he is barely an adult. Coming of age during the battles for southern Greece, Alexander the Great appears in all of his colorsas the man who first takes someones life at age twelve and who swiftly eliminates his rivals as soon as he comes to powerand emerges as a captivating, complex, larger-than-life figure. Fire from Heaven is the first volume of the Novels of Alexander the Great trilogy, which continues with The Persian Boy and Funeral Games. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Mary Renault including rare images of the author.

I'd never read a novel about Alexander the Great before this. I quite enjoyed it. This is the first in a trilogy, so it mainly dealt with his early life. I look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Reading in bed.

I‘d love to take a nice photo of the book but they REALLY DO NOT WANT YOU TO FORGET THAT IT‘S AN INTERLIBRARY LOAN!

I‘m starting the Alexander the Great trilogy.

I was debating choosing this one for #Macedonia #readingeurope2020 but went with a shorter book. Of course today it goes on sale.

rwmg Read it (and its sequel) anyway. Two of my favourite books ever. 😍😍😍 4y
Texreader @rwmg Really? Hmmmm. Wondering if I should grab it if it‘s still on sale. Ok just checked. No longer on sale. What was about it that made it a favorite? (edited) 4y
rwmg @Texreader She's a great storyteller. Wonderful world-building. Yes, her view of Alexander is seen through rose-coloured glasses but reading her books as a gay teen back in the 1970s, I felt she really “got“ the emotional component of being gay rather than focusing on sex and accepted it. Also, I read somewhere recently that most contemporary scholars interested in Alexander, when asked what first attracted their interest, answered “Mary Renault“. (edited) 4y
Texreader @rwmg That‘s awesome when an author can have such a touching impact! I‘ll keep an eye out for it again to try to catch it. Thanks so much! 4y

History has always been a subject I‘ve enjoyed so this weeks #unreadandontheshelf is selection of history books mostly but the one I‘m most interested in is Roseblood because it is supposed to be a Phantom of the Opera retelling. And that‘s one of my favorite broadway shows (and movie).

One more from the Louvre:) The Winged Victory of Samothrace was built to honor the Goddess of war, Niki.

Does anyone else love ancient Greek history?

On that note, here is a quote from Renault's excellent book on Alexander the Great:"They had not believed in him before he came; when they saw him, they believed still less; but when they watched the war-scarred faces of warriors forty years old, intent on his every word, they believed at last"

From Alexander to Hadrian. I missed putting Yourcenar's wonderful book in there too. #seasonsreadings2016 #fictionnonfictionpairing

A few of my favourite. All are masters in telling an amazing story. Special mention to Barbara Tuchman's The Guns of August which is one of the most important WW1 history you will ever read. #septphotochallenge #womenwriters
