Writers: Their Lives and Works
Writers: Their Lives and Works | DK
12 posts | 3 read | 1 reading | 6 to read
From Shakespeare and Jane Austen to Gabriel Garca Mrquez and Toni Morrison, this DK book features more than 100 biographies of the world's greatest writers. Introduced with a stunning portrait of each featured novelist, playwright, or poet, biographical entries trace the friendships, loves, and rivalries that inspired each individual and influenced their work, revealing insights into the larger-than-life characters, plots, and evocative settings that they created. Each entry explains how the person's writing developed during their lifetime, and sets it in context, conveying a powerful sense of the place and the period of history in which they lived. Lavishly illustrated with photographs and paintings of writers' homes, studies, and personal artifacts--along with pages from original manuscripts, first editions, and their correspondence--this book introduces the key ideas, themes, and literary techniques of each writer, revealing the imaginations and personalities behind some of the world's greatest novels, short stories, poems, and plays. Covering an eclectic range of authors from the Middle Ages to the present day, Writers provides a compelling glimpse of the lives and loves of each great writer.

What a wonderful way to find and/or rediscover the greats. I'm ashamed to say I didn't know everyone, so I have to vet reading––especially the late 20th-century writers. The hard part will be finding the best translations, though I trust the reviewers here at Litsy will show me the way.

I saw this at the bookstore and had to refrain from getting it. Even though I learned about a lot of these writers and their lives in school, I still want this book 📖 However, I cant seem to get over the fact that the Brothers Grimm aren‘t included! #bibliophile #nonfiction #literature #mustread #bookworm

We recently had the pleasure of stopping in Franklin, Indiana to visit Wild Geese Bookshop—a charming little bookstore named after one of our favorite poems, “Wild Geese” by Mary Oliver, which inspired the owner to leave her career as a lawyer and follow her dreams as a bookseller! Thanks to bookseller John who helped us by holding the book for this #bookfacefriday! #undergroundbookfaces

Here are the Christmas goodies from my amazing #litsypenpal. What a wonderful selection of books! My mouth was open in awe unwrapping them all. That writers book is right up my alley and I can‘t wait to get into it. That signed copy of “The Library Book” too! She even included some treats and toy for my Foxy (he‘s delighted). You are too much @Litlady and I‘m so thankful! Thanks a million and then some! I love it all!🌲🦊🎅🤗

Litlady Bookish gifts are the best gifts, IMO! 🎅🏻 Glad you like them, Becky! I had loads of fun shopping for you and Sir Foxy. Hope his gifts give a little wag of the tail. I have ‘The Library Book‘ so maybe a buddy read is in order next year! Merry Christmas, Becky, and a Happy New Year!!! 🎄🛷🤗 #LitsyPenPals rock! ❣️ 6y

Although this book was too expensive for me to buy, I found myself reading it for a long time in the bookstore & then ordering it from the library. Its short biographies of great writers are rewarding, always pulling me to look at one more. It‘s fascinating to see whose life & works merit a big spread & whose only get a brief note in an era‘s “directory.” Paging through this is a lot more fun than reading Wikipedia bios on a computer screen.

I discovered a beauty in the bookstore a few weeks ago. I passed it by because of the expense that it would have added to the purchases for that day. I've thought about it everyday since then. When I returned to the bookstore to see if it was still there 'waiting for me,' I noticed this quote by Albert Camus on the back cover, "The purpose of a writer is to keep civilization from destroying itself." This time I presented it to its new home.??

Leftcoastzen I am lusting after that book as well. 6y
Nute @Leftcoastzen Yes! The thought of having particular books in your possession is an obsession. I couldn‘t stop thinking about this book until I bought it and so far it was worth it. (edited) 6y
Leftcoastzen I will probably get it, a book like that looks like a keeper I would keep dipping into. 6y
