Lose Well | Chris Gethard

A laugh-out-loud, kick-in-the-pants self-help narrative for anyone who ever felt like they didnt fit in or couldnt catch a breakcomedian and cult hero Chris Gethard shows us how to get over our fear of failure and start living life on our own terms. Lets face it: we all want a seat at the cool table, a great job, and loads of money. But most of us wont be able to achieve this widely accepted, black-or-white, definition of winning, which makes us feel like failures, that were destined to a life of loserdom. Thats the conventional wisdom. Its also crap, according to comedian and cult hero Chris Gethard, who knows a thing of two about losing. Failing is an art form, he argues; in fact, its the only the way were ever going to discover who we are, what we really want, and how to live the kind of life we only dreamed about. Setting flame to vision boards and tossing out the "seven simple steps" to achieving anything, the host of the eponymous Trutv talk show and the wildly popular podcast Beautiful Stories from Anonymous People illustrates his personal and professional manifesto with hilarious and ultimately empowering stories about his own set-backs, missteps, and public failures, from the cancellation of his Comedy Central sitcom after seven episodes to rediscovering his comedic voice and lifes purpose on a public access channel. With his trademark wit and inspiring storytellinga cross between David Sedaris and Jenny LawsonGethard teaches us how to power through our own heros journey, whether were a fifteen-year-old starting a punk band or a fifty-year-old mother of three launching an Etsy page. In the process, he shows us how to fail with grace, laugh on the way down, and as we dust ourselves off, how to transform inevitable failures into endless opportunities. It might get a little messy, but thats exactly the point. Because the first step in living on your own terms is learning how to lose well, and more often than not, the revolutionary act of failing lets us witness firsthand what awaits us on the other side.

Great book about giving things your all even if it pushes you out of your comfort zone. How can you succeed if you don't try? It helps that it is written by one of my favorite comedians.

A self-help book mixed with some recollections from the career of cult comedian Gethard. He may not be the best known or most successful (by whatever terms you choose), but he has achieved a kind of success and stardom largely on his own terms. His advice, as the title suggests, is unconventional as well, but worthwhile. A pleasantly surprising, entertaining, and motivating read.

Suet624 I love his podcast 6y
Thndrstd @Suet624 he talks about it in the book but I haven‘t heard it. Need to check it out 6y

This was different from other books I‘ve read, and I did enjoy it. The author combines humor with his own experiences to offer encouragement for people to not give up on their dreams. I give it a solid 3 ⭐️⭐️⭐️

I saw the author interviewed on a late night talk show- had never heard of him or this book but it sounded interesting and it‘s available from the library - I‘m looking forward to reading something I know nothing about.

JLaurenceCohen His HBO one-man show, Career Suicide, is great 6y

This book is really meant for people just starting their careers but still has a positive message for others. I enjoyed hearing about Gethard‘s hijinks.

I met one of my heroes today. :)

KellieRusselburg I just adore Chris also. I met him in St. Louis and it made me so happy that he was just as kind in real life as he is on Beautiful Anonymous. 6y
DoonTheGoon @KellieRusselburg I know right? Just a stellar human being. We need more like him in the world. 6y
KellieRusselburg I got my book in a week or so ago but I decided to get the audiobook as well. There‘s a few hours of bonus content here of the most heartwarming interviews you‘ve ever heard in your life. He interviews his brother and some of the other guys in the book. It was just great. They kind of restored my faith in humanity for today. 6y
DoonTheGoon @KellieRusselburg OMG I might have to get the audiobook as well then! That sounds amazing! 6y

Finished this one just in time to attend his talk/book signing. I even made a small piece of fan art that I have to somehow find the courage to actually give to him!!!
I really enjoyed this book, just as I enjoy all of his projects. Some of the writing is a bit naive at times - but that's part of the charm. For me, this book and Amanda Palmer's "The Art of Asking" are essentials on the shelf of any creative's personal library.
