The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Village
The Single Ladies of Jacaranda Retirement Village | Joanna Nell
6 posts | 7 read | 16 to read
Joanna Nell's life-affirming debut is a moving, funny, heartwarming tale of love and community in the spirit of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry and Grace and Frankie The life of 79-year-old pensioner PEGGY SMART is as beige as the dcor in her retirement village. Her week revolves around aqua aerobics and appointments with her doctor. Following a very minor traffic accident, things have turned frosty with her grown-up children and she is afraid they are trying to take away her independence. The highlight of Peggy's day is watching her neighbour Brian head out for his morning swim. She dreams of inviting the handsome widower - treasurer of the Residents' Committee and one of the few eligible men in the village - to an intimate dinner. But why would an educated man like Brian, a chartered accountant no less, look twice at Peggy? As a woman of a certain age, she fears she has become invisible, even to men in their eighties. But a chance encounter with an old school friend she hasn't seen in five decades - the glamorous fashionista ANGIE VALENTINE - sets Peggy on an unexpected journey of self-discovery. 'I haven't been this entranced by a character since Eleanor (Oliphant, of course). This book is a joy - it's a celebration of age instead of an apology for it, and a reminder that life is always an adventure if you let it be. I loved this uniquely endearing book' KELLY RIMMER 'I loved it! I want to be Peggy when I'm older. With many laugh-out-loud moments, this book is sure to make you see "getting old" in a different light. A refreshing, funny, realistic and warm read' FIONA PALMER 'The perfect blend of funny and moving: had me laughing and crying in this ultimately uplifting story' NATASHA LESTER

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

Peggy is a very relatable and endearing character. I loved her tendency to unknowingly use the wrong words - she admired her husband's "self-defaecating humour" ?? I enjoyed this one ⭐⭐⭐

Soubhiville 🤣😂🤣 I already do that in my 40‘s, so that‘s definitely going to be me in old age! 3y

After reading her latest book I went looking for this one. Found in my favourite op shop. Very enjoyable read as there was so much this old lady could relate to. Wonderful insight for a writer so young. Turns out she is a GP with a passion for women‘s health and care of the elderly. 😊. #2020joybooks

cariashley How is Cunard these days? My dad grew up with a woman who was an exec there when I was a kid and she‘d get us these huge discounts - I have some great memories of dressing up for dinner on the QE2 😁 (edited) 5y

Witty, warm and oh-so feel good. As someone who works with senior citizens regularly I was so happy to see them take centre stage in this book, where they have full emotional lives including crushes (and what to do about them), rekindled friendships, the love between a human and their pet, and the desire to behave badly at any age. Read it in two days, and finished with a smile on my face.
