Fig, a sixth grader, wants more than anything to see the world as her father does. The once-renowned pianist, who hasnt composed a song in years and has unpredictable good and bad days, is something of a mystery to Fig. Though shes a science and math nerd, she tries taking an art class just to be closer to him, to experience life the way an artist does. But then Figs dad shows up at school, disoriented and desperately searching for Fig. Not only has the class not brought Fig closer to understanding him, it has brought social services to their door. Diving into books about Van Gogh to understand the madness of artists, calling on her best friend for advice, and turning to a new neighbor for support, Fig continues to try everything she can think of to understand her father, to save him from himself, and to find space in her life to discover who she is even as the walls are falling down around her. Nicole Mellebys Hurricane Season is a stunning debut about a girl struggling to be a kid as pressing adult concerns weigh on her. Its also about taking risks and facing danger, about love and art, and about coming of age and coming out. And more than anything else, it is a story of the healing power of loveand the limits of that power.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join the fun if you want.
This is day 75 #bookstoread #tbrpile #bookstagram

Such a quiet book about chaos, with beautiful moments of peace. Important representation of both queer issues and mental illness, but this book is so much more than that. I wish everyone would read it.

Libby1 This sounds beautiful. Thanks for sharing. 5y

Having trouble settling today, so I‘m going to try this middle grade and see if it does the job. I hate being restless, because that‘s when I want to Read All The Books or Knit All The Things.

Also, this has a beautiful cover.

DivineDiana It is a beautiful cover! Good luck! 👍🏻 5y

Fig and her father are on their own. After having to take care of her eccentric musician father during his "episodes," Fig dives into the world of Van Gogh to try to connect with her father and see the world the way he does. With beautiful writing and an insanely gorgeous cover, this novel approaches difficult subjects such as mental illness is a tactful, age appropriate way and provides much needed LGBTQ representation in middle grade fiction

This is the most gorgeous cover I‘ve ever seen, and I cannot wait for a finished copy in May.
Hurricane Season is a heartwarming MG coming-of-age story. Fig is a sixth grader who just wants everything to be normal, but her dad is bipolar, and after an incident at school, Child Protective Services is involved. She thinks if she understands art better—her dad was a famous musician before she was born—she‘ll be able to fix him & save her family.👇🏼

Kaylamburson (Cont. from above) She becomes obsessed with Vincent Van Gogh as she studies his art and the mental illness that seemed to define his life. There's so much love, hurt, and emotion within these pages. It's intense for a middle grade novel, but it's a beautiful story. There are a few sweet LGBTQ moments throughout this novel, too. 6y
