The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance
The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance: A Memoir | Elna Baker
6 posts | 17 read | 12 to read
"A wickedly funny debut. Baker is both self-absorbed and generous, whip-smart and nave; she apologizes for none of it." -People It's lonely being a Mormon in New York City. Every year, Elna Baker attends the New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance. This year, her Queen Bee costume (which involves a funnel stinger stuck to her butt) isn't attracting the attention she'd anticipated. So once again, Elna finds herself alone, standing at the punch bowl, stocking up on Oreos, a virgin in a room full of thirty-year-old virgins doing the Funky Chicken. But loneliness is nothing compared to what Elna feels when she loses eighty pounds, finds herself suddenly beautiful...and in love with an atheist. Brazenly honest, The New York Regional Mormon Singles Halloween Dance is Elna Baker's hilarious and heartfelt chronicle of her attempt to find love in a city full of strangers and see if she can steer clear of temptation and just get by on God. I forgot to put this book on my list for the #FreakyFriday reading event! Have you had your “Oh, shit!” moment yet? 😅

“TNYRMSHD” is a rollicking memoir about a woman attempting to stay true to her Mormon roots, while still trying to be cool & date in NYC. It has *very little* to do with Halloween!

Meh. This was a little much for me. I grew up very religious and also overweight and there was, IMO, a lot of shaming for both in here.

Pickpick

Faith frustrating love is definitely something I can relate to; although ultimately the author and I have made very different choices in that regard. Still a thoughtful, well written memoir.

In case you can't tell, I am a sucker for handwritten fonts, and fonts that look like they were written on an old-fashioned typewriter. 😍 #fortheloveoffonts #readjanuary

While I really wanted to reshare my 84 Charing Cross Road post for "a dress on the cover" (yuk yuk), this is also (kind of) a dress. Elna Baker's attempts to reconcile her Mormon faith with her desire for a 21st century love life fell into my lap at the exact right moment a few years ago. Coming off a bad break-up, Baker gave me the perspective I needed: I don't have to compromise my personal identity for anyone. #ReadJanuary

Bkwurm This book sounds right up my alley, adding it to my list now. Thank you! 7y

Skipped yesterday because I wasn't feeling great, so here's my #longtitles. I didn't think I had this many! #booktober (That's Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day down in the bottom left if you can't read it.)
