Northmen allied to the Irish, led by the fierce warrior Ragnall Ivarson, are soon joined by the Northumbrians, and their strength could prove overwhelming. And with Uhtred s own daughter married to Ivarson s brother, who can be trusted? In the struggle between family and loyalty, between personal ambition and political commitment, there will be no easy path. But a man with a warrior s courage may be able to find it. Such a man is Uhtred, and this may be his finest hour."

Some of the twists I saw coming, but it was still a very enjoyable read. I loved the character interactions, the humour, and the battle scenes were brilliantly described again. I look forward to the next installment of the series.

Number 9 of The Last Kingdom series did not disappoint. 💕. It was nice to see that Uhtred was not rescued by an arriving army. Here instead they used their wit and connections. Fast paced, well plotted, likeable characters, and lots of action. I love this series.

A fantastic read! The description of the battles is both immersive and thrilling! What I wouldn‘t give to experience a shield wall! #Fate is inexorable

Yet another enjoyable historical romp through the creation of Englaland (no that is not a typo). Cornwell inches his hero, Uhtred, closer to reclaiming his birthright as Lord of Bebbanburg. But after 9 books, I really need the inching to pick up the pace. But still a most enjoyable historical fiction novel.

Anyone read this?
I have never read Cornello, which is strange because he writes the kind of stories that l enjoy.
This one? I'd just buy it for the cover 😍

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I‘ve never read any of his either, but I need to make room for him soon I‘ve heard his Viking series is very good. (edited) 6y
DGRachel I know Cornwell has a lot of fans on Litsy, but I find his writing to be hard to get into and he does weird things with the story that bother me. I‘ve read/tried to read several of his books and he‘s just not for me, I fear, which is a shame because he picks time periods that fascinate me. 😔 6y
TrishB I love this series - but this is about number 8, so start at the beginning! 6y

TrishB @DGRachel I really like his stuff. It‘s weird when you want to like an author because it‘s your time period - but the books fall short! I feel like that about Conn Iggulden! 6y
DGRachel @TrishB I agree. You and I are opposites with these two authors. I love Conn Iggulden, but am consistently disappointed by Bernard Cornwell. 🤷🏻‍♀️ At least we have SKP in common. 😊 6y
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Viking series??? 😍😍😍 6y
JazzFeathers @DGRachel 'he does weird ghings with thr stiry'? Now l AM curious! 6y
JazzFeathers @TrishB Number 8? I had no idea. Do you know what this series us about then? 6y
DGRachel @JazzFeathers I have the same problem with Cornwell that I have with Philipa Gregory-I expected historical fiction and got more magical realism. Agincourt barely touched on the actual battle and instead focused on a peasant who supposedly talked to saints. 🙄 Gregory has Elizabeth Woodville practicing witchcraft. Maybe they did, but most history books don‘t mention that. 6y
DGRachel I liked the first of his King Arthur trilogy, but found the rest to be lacking. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I haven‘t totally given up on him because he writes about time periods in which I am really interested, but I manage my expectations better for his books. 6y
JazzFeathers @DGRachel l actually like magic realism when it's well done. Maybe l should try him. 6y

Uthred spends a lot of time worrying about getting his rightful home back !!

Kalalalatja Is it any good? It sounds interesting 🤔 6y
TrishB @Kalalalatja it‘s a great series - this is about the 8th one - need to start at the beginning! 6y

Andrew65 I read the first on many years ago which I really enjoyed, but for some reason never got back to the series. 6y
TrishB @Andrew65 I have so many series like that, where I‘ve enjoyed the first one but don‘t seem to have bothered after that! I guess with so many books sometimes your reading brain just decides for you. These are light relief for me, the history is good, but it‘s Uthred that pulls me back, he‘s good fun!! (edited) 6y
Andrew65 @TrishB Yes, hate to think how many series I have on the go! 6y

As I read these lines, I thought this is as much true in today‘s world as it probably was in the Middle Ages.

LazyDays Because of this I am stacking💓 6y
Awk_Word_Smith @LazyDays Cornwell‘s Saxson Series is really good if you enjoy historical fiction with an emphasis on history. 6y
LazyDays @Awk_Word_Smith I've never read any of their work. so this should be fun! 6y
