I started with â€śThe Bearâ€ť, since my prof said it was the most important story for our class. I could not finish it in a week, and I have no desire to come back to it later (for now, at least). I don‘t mind a difficult text, but I didn‘t feel this book gave me any reward for its difficulty. I was bored and frustrated most of the time. It just isn‘t my cup of tea: not the themes, not the writing style.

I couldn‘t finish this one, I couldn‘t even read it. The short stories in this book together form a novel. I started each story but finished none. It‘s me, I know. I loved Faulkner‘s As I Lay Dying, but now the typical Mississippi accent just irritated me (reading English is difficult enough as it is). So no, not for me. #1001books

robinb Faulkner is hard. Period. He‘s from my neck of the woods, and I took a college course specifically on his work. I enjoyed it, but it wasn‘t the easiest class. What sticks in my mind the most about his writing? Don‘t be so stingy with your periods, PLEASE! đź™„đź¤¨ 6y

arubabookwoman I love Faulkner, but he is extremely difficult to read even if English is your native tongue. Kudos for trying! And I can‘t imagine what he would be like translated. Translating Faulkner May be more difficult than translating Finnegan‘s Wake! 6y

Blaire I read this Junior in high school, I don‘t think I could have done it without a teacher‘s guidance. It is difficult even by Faulkner standards. 6y

Taylor @BarbaraBB Yeah I like the hard ones sometimes, if I think they have heart. I don‘t like Nabokov at all and he can be pretty hard. I haven‘t read â€śGo Down Mosesâ€ť though. 6y

BarbaraBB @Taylor I know what you mean, although I love Nabokov. The biggest challenge was Joyce though and reading Proust feels like a fight too at times! 6y

Lacythebookworm I did transcription of an 18th century Boston woman's letters and it was very difficult. She used up every inch of space and even wrote across the pages! Good luck! đźŤ€ 8y

ju.ca.no @Lacythebookworm thanks đźŠ I already once transcribed a play from the 17th century but the hndwriting was bigger and it was a group projects which also helped.. but I hope I will get used to reading it after a few pages :) 8y
