Voices: The Final Hours of Joan of Arc
Voices: The Final Hours of Joan of Arc | David Elliott
13 posts | 12 read | 11 to read
Bestselling author David Elliott explores how Joan of Arc changed the course of history and remains a figure of fascination centuries after her extraordinary life and death. Joan of Arc gets the Hamilton treatment in this evocative novel. Told through medieval poetic forms and in the voices of the people and objects in Joan of Arc's life, (including her family and even the trees, clothes, cows, and candles of her childhood), Voices offers an unforgettable perspective on an extraordinary young woman. Along the way it explores timely issues such as gender, misogyny, and the peril of speaking truth to power. Before Joan of Arc became a saint, she was a girl inspired. It is that girl we come to know in Voices.

I stacked the book ? after finding it through this quote.

“I am a war cry,
bold and brash.
I am kindling.
I am ash,
an evanescent glory.”

David Elliott, Voices: The Final Hours of Joan of Arc

This was so original and creative- I loved how the author pulled transcript from Joan of Arc's trials in with his poetry to give it a little more depth.

It‘s a pick. This work didn‘t have the emotional punch of Blood Water Paint by McCullough but it did tell the story of Joan of Arc in a compelling and beautiful way. I loved the shape poetry, the use of the transcripts from the trials and the shifting narrators. Some of the prose seemed a bit forced but it was wonderfully creative.

Still trying to be into poetry in general, but definitely into a verse novel about Joan of Arc 👌🏻

I also loved Bull last year because David Elliott does a highly entertaining historical/mythological retelling!

While I enjoyed #Voices , I didn‘t love it as much as #Bull 🤷‍♀️ I feel like if I would have known more about Joan of Arc‘s story going into the book, I would have liked this one more. I did think the format of the book was lovely. The story was told in different formats of verse by Joan as well as other people and objects she encountered in her life. At times the verse on the page was even in the shape of the object telling the story.

After finishing #Bull I was in the mood for more #DavidElliott 🤓 I picked up an #ARC of #Voices at YallFest this year. It tells the story of the last hours of Joan of Arc‘s life. The story is told in #verse by Joan as well as other people and objects in her life. I‘m almost halfway through and truly enjoying this read!
