She's an interesting person, Miss Lister. I delighted in her rigorous study schedule and many brisk walks to the library! Less appealing was her snobbery (she's constantly disdaining Halifax society as vulgar) and there were more veal cutlets and gooseberry tarts than anyone might wish. I liked how HW italicises the parts AL wrote in her "crypt-hand": the ladies, of course, but amongst other things her evident unease (and trouble) over her dress.
